I was in the U.S. Navy as a photographer for 6.5 years. I enjoyed photography in the military, but I always wanted to shoot the kind of work that I was seeing in W and Vogue. So, I got out of the military, came to New York, and just started shooting. It's difficult in the beginning to get good models to shoot because you haven't proven yourself, but that gets easier with time and experience. Networking...meeting makeup artists, hair stylists, and wardrobe stylists is key to getting yourself started. Build a good team and your work will show drastic improvement.
I wish you much success in your own photography goals. You've got a nice self-portrait series going there. Who needs models, when you've got yourself. ;) I'll look forward to seeing your new work.
