About No complicated stuff this time. Just a series of spiders.... There have been quite a few spider photos on UF recently, and there's not much difference between them... None the less, I wonder what you'll think.

No PS rework in this shot (straight out of the camera). The background tones are caused by the light of the setting sun in the sky. I used a detached flash to illuminate the spider.

Cool! Great technical quality and I like the combination of colours in background. The "neon-spider" is still my favourite of the three though!

Hi Hugo .. I know you don't want to hear this ..but as biliana said..It's "kinda out of focus" .. and you answered "many think it"s razor sharp" ... It's not. But a great capture though.

Ik vind deze wel een toevoeging aan de massale 8potige aanvallen die we te verduren hebben gekregen op usefilm.

Geen van mijn spinnefoto's komt ook maar hier in de buurt.

Fantastic work my friend!!!
Without Post Work this is absolute FANTASTIC.
Very interesting the missing ring from the net.
I have never seen this kind of effect, what do you think about it? What could be the reason?

I like the abtraction in this pic, not centered the spider, but ballanced with the background.
Superb DOF.

I prefer this one to the 2nd one I have just commented on. More of the spider is in focus (F8 v F11) - I also like the background, the spider literally jumps out lol

I am surprised how much grain there is at ISO400 with the D100, yet it does not detract from the photo.

Best wishes,
Steve

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 10/10/2004
Hi Peter, The way to correct the effect you describe is to reduce the intensity of the flash. I didn't as I like to think the glistening effect you refer to fits with my perception of spiders. It makes it look even creepier, I think. As to the leg, the DOF works both ways, but I see what you mean. I didn't look at it that way before.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Patrick, Thanks for your comment. That's what I like about macro photography. The relative shallow DOF does create a perspective. As there are many similar shots of spiders on UF, I tried to approach the creepy subject a bit differently....

Hi Arwa, Thanks for your comment. The flash creates some highlights, making the spider glisten in the light; There's probably some overexposure in those areas, but looking at the histogram in PS, its still passable...;o)

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 10/10/2004
Hi Thilo, this sure is something different! That's one of the good things about digital, it makes a new experiment / subject more easily accessible.

I took a couple of shots without flash, too, and it does bring out the subject more. The darkness of the background is also due to the TTL metering with flash and the f/11 aperture. Attached a version with a considerable smaller aperture (f/5). It has a huge effect on the background. I decided to go with the one I posted, as I found the deep tones and darkness more fitting with the creepy subject. (I don't like spiders, but that's also what I find fascinating in them...)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 10/10/2004
Hi John, I value your opinion... I don't like spiders either, but with a digital camera, they have become more accessible. I also think there's a difference between the subject of a photo and the quality of it. Some images create an atmosphere that's not inviting, but that doesn't mean i don't appreciate the shot. It's fascinating to see what happens to the background with a 1:2 macro, even with a smaller aperture.

Consider this an experiment, it's not a theme that will stick with me.... There are two more to come, and then I'll move on to something different again...;o)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Tiro, thanks for your comment. I'm not fond of spiders either. I find them creepy, but that makes them intriguing too... Not to worry, I have two more to come, but that'll be the end of me shooting critters and creepers for a while...)

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 10/10/2004
Hi Verena, Thanks for your comment. I know what you think of photos of such critters, and I still feel the same way. But with the D100 and the 105 macro, I thought I try something new for a change... As always, I have two more to come, but I promise, I'll keep it at that...;o)

Hang in there, It'll be over soon...;o)

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 10/10/2004
Hi Kurt, thanks for your comment, much appreciated. That's exaclty the reason I've passed up on spider shots before, too, but since expanding to digital, venturing out into new fields / subjects of photography has become more easy. Consider it a way of experimenting... Next time, I'll pass on them again...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 10/10/2004
Hi Antonio, Thanks for your comment. I think with the web completely visible and in focus, I would've lost the feeling of depth in this shot. The DOF is quite shallow, but parts of the web are in focus, though, creating the diagonal. All very consious decisions...;o)

Cheers,

Hugo

amazing spider portrait! I particularly like your DOF as it divides the photo into 2 in an almost metaphysical way and the detail of the spider. The diagonal approach adds to the image as it gives a narrative mood! This one along with one from Billiana are my favourite spider portrait so far!

Dear Hugo,

wow, and now for something completely different =)

It's obvious that the digonal here makes this image. very good dynamics in here. detail and lighting on the spider is well chosen, too. the mild flash helps a lot, I guess. I find the background a bit too dark though... not sure why.

I'm thinking about the loss in detail from the web. Does that come from the flash? Would love to see more of this part.

anyway, good work as always.

take care,
thilo

Nice shot Hugo, spiders on a web offer some special challenges, one of which is the background, and on this it adds greatly to the image. Exposure is usually tough also, and I think you did well here ecpecially considering that no PS was used for band-aids.

arwa abdullah   {K:34415} 10/9/2004
The angel and the red and blue shads in the back make him look as if he is performing in a real circus for hundreds of audience
The selective focusing is really powerful too, hints of the web showing and the full details of his fur, but small parts r over exposed is it from the flash? Or is this how he looks and to my inexperienced eyes it looks like an over exposure?
Amazing image hugo, I really like it 7++++++++++++++++++++++++

Groeten,

Hugo

hugo, finally! a subject i understand ;^) beautiful detail in both the spider and the web. i suspect it's a result of the flash power and positioning. i also like the perspective you chose in combination with the shallow dof. maintaining the web visible as well as excellent detail on the critter itself. also, the setting sun breaks up the background very nicely. kudos on catching this without the web moving on you, btw. i like this one very much. and with your propensity to post the best one last, i can't wait to see it.

take care,
tom

Peter De Rycke Peter De Rycke   {K:41212} 10/9/2004
Oh, you got very close .. exposure is quite good with the detached flash .. one thing i don't like is the contrast .. seems a bit harsh to me, certainly on the white "fur" .. would not know how to correct this .. the 2 bottom legs seem to be flipped to the back, of course this is an effect caused by the DOF which make the legtops seem more on the background ..
Overall a good effort !

regards, Peter

Ted vandenBergh   {K:5119} 10/9/2004
Heb daar zelf altijd moeite mee. Groet, ted.

John Bohner   {K:8368} 10/9/2004
Nope - still hate spiders and that makes it hard to enjoy this. Maybe you could have a vote, what is creepier, photos of spiders from the bottom or top? I find it fascinating to see what happens to backgrounds as we go to more and more extreme macros with tiny DOF. Technically a good job but I still dont like it, JB

Hi Hugo, yes there are lots of spider photos and it's hard to create one that's unique from all the others. I've passed up shots of spiders like this one in my own yard because I'd think why bother, it' just another spider.
I think you have managed to create something differnt here. The B/G colors really make this photo something special. Nice contrast to the spider. Best wishes, Kurt
