Hello Jim,

I see what you mean. As I downloaded it I remember thinking to crop out the lower edge of the tree where the tree had a gauge in it. I am still learning about adjusting my exposures and what not... still feel uneasy with making the right choices. I still need to read up and practice. Thanks for your input. I appreciate it.

There are two things I would recommend to improve the impact of your image. Waiting until the lighting was less harsh would be a way to improve the exposure or under expose your image 2/3 of a stop or so when in this lighting situation next time around. The highlights are a little overblows particularly on the colorful moss and tree bark. Focusing your image and keeping distracting elements off the edge of your frame will help keep the viewers eye glued to your subject. I've attached a cropped version of your image so you can see what a difference removing extraneous objects from the edge of your image can do to the impact of a photograph. Hopefully this will help the next time you go out to take a similar shot.
