Hugo, this is amazing. I have always wanted to see the Aurora Borealis. At times it is visible from Martha's Vineyard, I am told - but I never caught it at the right time. Does is move before your eyes, or stay pretty steady for a 5 minute exposure?

Critique? All I can say is the church is a little overexposed as is the sky, but WHO CARES! Minor adjustments in post can tweak it.
This is a great and exciting photograph. Keep up the good work, and thanks for posting this for those of us too far south to see this event.

Excellent image. Aurora pictures usually lacks a perspective which you have provided by a well lite house in the forground. Color or auroa are also nicely captured since stars are visible. This is a perfect shot to me. Great job Hugo.

Well... my indepth critique focuses on the front part of the church - a little bit too overexposed... But let's talk about it... Isn't the glow of the building an extra feature of the photo? I don't know... I believe it is...

Hugo this is a very good night photo.
At first I thought the white spots were from long exposure, but then I realized that they are stars. I have never seen a green sky before and the rays projecting down are awesome...
I like the silhouetted mountains but I think the church might have flowed into the image a bit more if it were a little bit more under exposed, but then again that might have lost the affect of the sky.

Hi Saeed, thanks for your comment. Always much appreciated! Under the given circumstances, I think any film would've blown out with the 6 minutes exposure, but if you scroll down through my comments, (specifically my replies to Max, Stefan and Verena), the "secret of the trade" is revealed.
As I mentioned in your reply to you, I rather rely on my photoshop skills.... This is a composite image of three (images posted in my replies), hence the difference in exposure of church and sky. The three original shots were all taken in the same location, only at different times and in different directions....

Well Hugo, we have a lot of fun with you ;) Your work is very realistic, it?s very hard to distinguish three different shots, also the lighting coud be compatible with the scene, your PS skills are excellent! I never think that a photo is the result of a heavy work in PS and I always start from the assumption that is an original photo, but this experiment makes me think :?How many fakes we have commented in the past?? damn this is NICE, hugo! gorgeous sky! 6 min exposure? don't auroras move? i've never seen one so i don't know for sure but i thought they moved rather "quickly". i guess not. or is that why it's a solid green color?
the chruch in front definitely takes this one over the top. i'm reminded of the connection between god and nature. god is nature, etc. come pray at the altar. question is: is the altar inside or outside?
technically there is nothing wrong here. simply awe. the only shame is that as a single shot, i don't have 2 more to look forward to. very well done my friend! keep 'em coming...

For someone who is not religious in any way this capture can still only be called "Behold". The Aurora Borealis has bathed the church up to the fence in heavenly light yet kept the landscape in silhouette. A really magnificent re-work and thanks for sharing especially since most of us will never have the experience of seeing this for ourselves.

Hi Peter, First of all thanks for your comment.
To be honest, this is a composite image, composed of the tree individual shots I attached to my replies to Max, Stefan and Verena. The colours, however, are genuine, I didn't touch them. In the Northern light, there is some chromatic aberation due to the long exposure, as the effect itself is much more pale blue.
The Norhtern light is written across the sky, which happens pretty fast, but it's a continuous process, with the long exposure, mo0re than one pass is captured. Does that answer your question?

Hi Thilo, First of all, thanks for your comments. I posted the original shots in my reply to Max, Stefan and Verena, wich will explain why the church seems so bright.
In brief, it's a complete composite image. I didn't give it a way when I uploaded the image, because I wanted to see if my Photoshop skills would be a match for all of you, and to see if I could produce a "perfect" image. I only succeeded in the first, I think....
So the composite image explains the difference in exposure between sky and church (which was brightly lit), but the sky is original. The long exposure caused some chromatic aberation, rendering it green. I think that fits with the extremely impressive effect the northen light had on me....
About the grain, I'm not sure what you mean. It's very light, and I think its the scan, rather than actual grain.

Thanks for your comment. First let me tell you the actual setting of this shot. As it is a composite of three images (the original shots posted in my replies to Max, Stefan and Verena) That explains the huge difference in exposure between church and sky. The rest, including the soft glow on the mountains, is Photoshop induced from the background shot. I did this as an experiment, with the intention of "confessing" eventually.
As to the tilt, I don't think there is any. I spent quite some time figuring out the angles and matching them. The church itself was build on a slope, and I did even correct that....

Hi Stephen, Yes, being far up north and facing North too reduces the star trails to a minimum. The actual exposure on the sky (See my reply to Max, Stefan and Verena) was even longer (about 8 minutes)

Hi Max, I'm pretty sure of the exposure, when shooting north (both in direction as well as location) the stars do not show many trails.
In all fairness, I have to confess something....
I posted this shot as an experiment, as it's a composite image of three shots, of which I'll post the first one, the landscape, below. I tried to see if I could create a perfect shot, which partially worked. This shot didn't receive the rating I had hoped for, but nobody really discovered the "trick". All three shots are mine, though, and taken in the same location on the same day.

Incredibly strong. The composition is perfect and the image so dense in features to stare at. The stars in the sky add interest to the aurora, the details on the mountain slopes and, of course, the church too.
I don't know how is the original beside this, but I would try to step down a bit to reveal any additional features in the highlights.
Is it me ? I think the horizon slants by a degree or two to the left.

the image really looks surrealistic, but that happens with most extreme long exposures like this one. the colors reach a stage where they even hurt the eyes =)
the composing itself is well done and balanced. the church on the lower left, the aurora dominating the upper areas and even the mountain that ascend to the right fit in perfect. two minor things. first, I find the church being a bit to much lighted. not sure if that's on the original picture but the sky is unreal enough. second there is some grain left that you might delete easily with the blur tool in PS.
anyway, great comeback and well done night shot.

Hugo, I never saw aurora in real .. but i remember there is constant movement in those "curtains", is that right ? So your 5 min. exposure means the movement is rather slow ?
If these are the real colours, well then only thing i can say: one of the most beautiful shots i've seen lately .. bravo !

but seeing such a strong nature event could bring you in such a direction.

Just in time indeed. It would be a good shot without the church but the combination is just wonderful. It may be a single shot, but the previous shot in your portfolio also had a strong inner glow and one very dominant color...

Old and dear Pentax? ?she? worked in a so beautiful way! I have never seen an Aurora Boralis with my eyes, but I?m sure that I would have seen what there is in this photo, it?s so real and magic too, I love the light effects of course, but also the colour of the sky, unusual and wonderful, are you sure about the exposure? I can?t see star trails, maybe your memory lacks (I?m always memory down ;) ), anyway it?s not so important, I like this splendid shot!!
Thanks for your great comment on my photo, the background issue is very nice. Antonella would have preferred a closer aperture and a neat background, you suggest a larger one and a blurred background? maybe mine is better ;))) Just kidding, I like to see the different interpretations on the same subject and each of them is right. I used Auto program because the man was riding quicky and I didn?t want to waste time adjusting the camera settings, so f/4 is not decided by me ;) If I had more time, I would have used a larger aperture, just to blur a little more the columns.
