About Taken from the top of the empire state building. You can see the Chrysler bldg to the left.

Just liked the way the bird was looking at me :) It seemed he would not get out of my view of the city until I took his photo LOL

No PS except for a little cropping on the sides. Many have mentioned that it is too bad that his feet are cut off in the image... not much choice in that because part of a fence was blocking his feet.

Thanks Naftali... yes, it would be nice to have the feet included. And the fence you are talking about, well I cropped that off in the camera when I took the image. I guess that is one drawback of composing/editing a scene in the camera instead of later on in the computer.

nice catch of an interesting character! you are a quick draw!
IMHO, the shallow dof works very well - gives a hint of the city but allows you to focus on the subject. but - arrrgh- the cut feet do bother me, though i still like the image. may be it would look better with the offending fence? obscured feet is different from cut feet that have nowhere to go.

Adriane Chernus   {K:880} 4/10/2005
Like this very much. Sometimes I wonder why people comment on stuff like "cutting off feet" because if you go past the moment waiting for the perfect shot you don't get expressions like this. Bravo....

Paul,
Congratulation for your portfolio... I could see you can work with different ideas and, in special, with light in the night.
But, I confess, this one it is very intereting image because this kind of situation you didn't have time to prepare yourself but you got it!!!
Regards

Don't you just love it when you can catch them doing something like this? I posted a photo of a white swan doing something like this a few weeks back. I really like the sharp focus on the pigeon with the city skyline thrown out of focus.

Too bad you lost his feet, otherwise this is wonderful. The tilt of his head is very amusing. This bird certainly has a New York attitude.

Matt Lefank    {K:923} 6/17/2004
I definitely think that this photo would be a better photo than the city. You don't get the opportunity to take photos like that often. It's almost like the bird was posing for the camera. It's one of those photos that you don't plan to take, but turns out to be one of the best.

Hugo, thanks for the comments.. yes not much time to compose. As I replied to Carmem, the feet were cut off because there was a part of a fence (to stop people from jumping off haha) that blocked my view of his feet... also, I wanted to get all of the chrylser building in the image...even though it was out of focus. thanks again...

i don't agree with thilo on this. it is not a cityscape, an would have no reason to 'make it more interesting' to have anything other than the (hilarious!) main subject in plain view. great catch!!

Thilo, thanks for the comment...could not do much about the DOF, did not have much of chance to change the settings and still capture the image. I think either a min or max DOF would work, would just convey a different feeling.
