Location City -  Near Duzaj
State -
Country - Iran   Iran
About The little vilage of Duzaj, about 150 km south west of Tehran was struck by a severe earthquake in 1964. The relief worksers from all over the world not only rebuild the village on a hill, 800 m from the original spot, but also taught the vilagers how to change to a more sustainable agriculture in the barren desert. To date, the locals grow Dutch potatoes. It's almost unbelievable that anything would grow in this remote, forbidding place.

When we drove up to Duzaj, through the uninhabited desert, we passed a few villages, as abandoned as the rest of the landscape. During the winter, the peasants flee to Tehran, only to return when the brief spring has settled in and the snow has disappeared. Spring is short, apparently only a few weeks, before the hot, suffocating summer starts.

This shot was taken in February. The increasing strenght of the sun is sure sign of spring, but at 7 degrees Celsius with a freezing stiff wind, it was quite unplesant to venture out of the safety of our car.

Your comments, as usual, are very appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

hi Hugo, this place is absolutely alone! I also liked the grainy effect in the sky.. I would try to put an alive subject in this image but this time I afraid the feeling could fly away .. also congratulations for BIP. best regards.

Hi Peter, thanks for your comment, and for adding me to your friends list... I'm not a fully professional photographer, but I like to do the occasional assignments. Mostly reportive shots and the occasional wedding. This series (specifically the three portraits of the people of Duzaj) was an assignment for the NPS, Andere Tijden.

I'll definately follow your work too, thanks again,

Cheers,

Hugo

nice peaceful scene and that's a bit against the odds in this part of the world. great shot with soft colours and tones that help to fish the statement the composition initiates.

Formidable, stark and desolate yet you have captured a quiet tranquil beauty about it.

Hi Hugo, before reading your about, I thought to a desert, a desert of snow instead of sand, I feel the same mood, it?s hard to think that this landscape is in Iran; I like the drawings created by the snow and the soft colours, but over all I love the sense of solitude in this image. Hugs Max

PS: I love women too, but they can be terrible sometimes!! Stay tuned ;)

This is very beautiful! I don't care so much about difference in colour tones, because they usually look different on all screens anyway! The mood is to strong here to pay attention to colour tones.

First I looked at the photo and felt the composition was great! Then I saw the one you added later, and wow that is even better! A really wonderful photo, Hugo!

Ps. I'm so sorry, I accidently deleted your comment today! Linn wanted me to post a photo of my son with dirty face, and that photo you commented had 0 views so I thought I can delete it and always upload it another day. (I had to delete one to be allowed to post one). Anyway, AFTER I deleted it I got a message to my mailbox that you commented it. Well... thanks anyway, I still appreciated it! :-))

Hi Hugo,

exactly this is the version I meant, and yes, much better!

I still need to check your old framing and see the difference. Will come back later to this point.

Cheers,
Verena

Hi Verena, Much appreciated!...;o) I agree about the lousy colours.

About the crop, I didn't even consider it, untill you pointed it out to me... Very good suggestion! (if this is what you meant...;o) Thanks, very valuable imput!

Any thoughts on my framing compared to the old ones?

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo,

from me a quite hard, perhaps not useful cropping proposal, but I like only approx. 45% from the top, more the view in the background.

Also the light blue snow in the front is annoying to me.

Sorry, not one of my favourites :(

Cheers,
Verena

The light snow cap on the ground draws some very intersting lines and shapes. It's fascinating to note the gradual shift from the patchy foreground, to the linear diagonals of the middle plane and the waves of the mountains tops on the horizon. A great landscape, well framed.
If you have a chance to rescan your negative and correct the colour shift, I'm sure you will be rewarded.

The emphasis lies on the textures and tones in this shot, so I agree with Stefan that it may be interesting to try B&W...

Hi Hugo!

Nice to see your fantastic other side. Your Lanscape shots are fantastic too. Very nice harmonic coplosition with abstract feeling. Great DOF usage. A B1 filter should be used to create the clouds more plastic or take it onto B&W with orange. But it is perect this way too.
Congrats, Radák

OUTSTANDING!! Fantastic image you created. I love the contrasting lights and darks especially. I really like the camera angle and the inclusion of the foreground, pretty much equal to the background...

VERY NICE work Hugo!

Hi Stefan, Thanks for your comment. I've been toying with this image before I uploaded it (using the original for this post) and I agree with you. I'm planning to print this one when (if) I find the time. That'll be a B&W conversion, and the I think colour negative will produce the effect you are getting at. I'll also burn the sky a bit as you suggest. Won't do the shot harm I think.

Cheers,

Hugo

hugo,

i'm back! sort of... ;^) been very busy lately with work and i need to be in photography mode in order to edit and comment on photos. hopefully next week won't be as busy.

i really dig this, btw. right up my alley ;^) i love the composition although this type of landscape shot is very difficult as i'm sure you are well aware. my feelings on this one focus on the way the sky is almost pure white. too bad you can't do much about it considering the foreground snow and the time of day. perhaps a shot later in the day to increase depth and detail with horizontal lighting. i wonder how much of this effect comes from your scanner? not having a scanner, i do not know what their effects are.

off to catch up with my comments ;^) take care,
tom

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 5/28/2004
This is a scene that would work very well as a lithograph or at least some kind of print. It is close to that form already and maybe it would be worth pursuing a higher contrast without going to pure b/w? The composition is good. Perhaps a darker sky would help emphasize the landscape a little?

Rob Ernsting Rob Ernsting   {K:8899} 5/28/2004
Very desolate and cold image of a landscape with a good defintion in the light snow parts. Good work. Regards, Rob.

Hi Thilo, once again, you are right about the colours. I had the film developed and printed in Iran, as I needed these prints in a hurry. Aparently, I went to the wrong shop... Luckily, it was only one roll of film.

Hugo

Good landscape my friend. The change between the snow and the grass is very nice as a composition. Good quality too. I think perchaps little less brightness could help here but not big deal. See you!

Helas, the third one. these sequences add a lot of tension to the viewer, Hugo =)

Boy, THAT'S peace. silence. tranquility. desperation. but also hope (the bushes that work thru the winter), depth, dimension. Technically, you should work on the color channels IMHO. there is too much green in the snow (especially on the front left) and I see too much blue.

good one, hugo! cheers, thilo

Beautiful, peaceful shot with excellent perspective, lines and amazing dof. Thanks to the cold light, it gives a very icy feeling. :)
Many thanks for your comment and compliments for my last, lucky work.
Have a nice w/e!

Hi Hugo, Now we are traveling with you across the snow... great shot!!! It really can be appreciated that by now the snow is melting and some vegetation is returning from it's sleep... I love the composition... but I feel a grainy effect in the sky... Nevertheless I love it!!!

Cheers,

Maria
