About Dan Lightner Photography
(Magicicada septendecim) Brood X .We are lucky here in the Eastern United States.
We are Blesses every 17 years.Thats when the Cicada make their return. They live 17 years underground, before emerging to mate.
When they emerge there are literally Billions of them. The male Cicadas sing to the females and with billions of them singing it gets very noisy for 6 weeks. This is the first I have found. The rest will surely follow next week.I remember 34 yrs ago it was crazy they were everywhere. As I mentioned this Group is called Brood X. Something if you live through it you will never forget. They are harmless. Some people eat them they say they are very tasty.

Haha this goes straight in to my favourites! Both because it's such a fantastic and perfect quality INTERESTING photo AND because your text about it gives me almost those face expressions that I have on my bio! ;-))

I have never heard about these, and reading your story I just feel WOW! But EAT? Noooooooway! :-))

So extremely good details, colours, dof and everything! And look such great contact you got with it! It's staring with wide open red eye!

Very nice, Dan. You have told an interesting nature story and made a good photo, too, with most detail preserved and the beautiful out of focus background.

Dan....whadya say after work Friday, we get a twelve pack, a butterfly net, sit around a campfire and eat these till one of us pukes!?!?!?
Loser has to submit a bare fanny shot.
This shot is incredible! I knew that you were going to get some awesome shots of these, I've been out of town for several days, and apparently missed their arrival. I'm sure that there will be thousands on my doorstep, when I return. Oh goody.

Hi Dan,

A classic, great Cicada picture! It shows your usual careful attention to composition, background, and sharpness of the main subject. The diagonal flow is perfect.

I haven't seen any yet here near Annapolis - I expect they'll be emerging all this week, and I'm really looking forward to seeing them... like a reunion with old pals after all these years. I remember the 1970 and 1987 returns - but I was only 3 years old in 1953 for that one :-)

I don't plan to eat them, but I do plan to photograph them.

Best regards,
SteveR

Amazing photo, amazing story. Thank you for telling us. And as you say they are tasty, I think: so is grass (for cows and goats). Greetz, Ted

Wonderful capture and excellent description. You are indeed fortunate to be in an area where you can witness their re-emergence. Well done.

Exquisite macro, Dan! I like the motion blur in the the third leg (are the camera settings right?); the little creature is actually moving! Very interesting explanation, learned something today....) Can imagine you are happy about this one! (I would be...;o)

Cheers,

Hugo
