Exciting texture, like textile, and shallow DOF. Beautiful! Must play more with my scanner too. /H

It looks like it's floating in water. I like how the scanner renders the un-flatness of the Indian corn. This is awards material.

Thanks for your comments on my scanner-as-camera image! I like the fuzziness of this one of yours. How did that happen? The combination of fuzzy edges and highly detailed middles appeals to me. It's a pleasure to meet another intrepid experimenter on the scanner-as-camera frontier.

Elsewhere in your portfolio I read that you're not too keen on technical details, so I'm sorry if the following bores you. You may find it worthwhile, though. I've found that removing the lid from the scanner and scanning in a darkened room helps to get the most detail from the machine. I intend to try using directed lights, such as bright flashlights, to even out the illumination for deeper objects, like faces. The problem (or at least one of them!) with using a scanner as a camera is that sections of the subject closer to the platen get over-exposed and sections further away get under-exposed. If one could find a way to even out the illumination the marvelous DOF and detail capture of this alternate camera would really shine! When and if I get some good results I'll post them -- keep your eyes open and your scanner warmed up! I've attached a copy of my very first scanner-as-camera image, done way back in about '91. The hands were scanned and overlaid on the face. Sorry about the low color-count! I was working with an Amiga computer at the time. While the best graphics machine readily available back then, it could only do four bit color. Notice that the fingertips are flattened -- since then I've learned not to press my subject against the glass!

I love this!!

What a magic image. I have seen this worked before but more as a gimmick. However, the conception, composition, DOF, texture and lighting in your creation are all perfect. well done. This is art!

Congratulations.
John.

Hi Gayle, really great effect. I like it! Especially the thought process behind the creativity. Must have a go at this myself :-) Been a bit busy lately and not been able to be so active in Usefilm, but will be back into it with a vengeance shortly. Best wishes, your friend neil

This is a very cool shot! It has inspired me to try it myself. I have had a good time with it. You can also see my go at it in my portfolio but for some reason usefilm is not letting me leave the link here. You can just click on my name to see my fish... =)
Take care,
Janine

Looks good. I have tried my hand at this a bit myself: http://www.usefilm.com/image/319535.html and a couple others if you wanted to take a look. Surprising what you can do with a scanner. But is it a photograph? LOL... Jon.

Great! I'm in your corner. Love the effect. The DOF and the texture makes it for me. Cheers! Carlheinz
