About How's it goin' viewer? If you're wondering, this is not a photo of a decorated missile, it's a photo of the "Spire of Dublin" taken with infrared film in a point and shoot camera with a red filter handheld over the lens. It was experimentation! Personally, I'm amazed with the photo as by lying on the ground and pointing up from the base I seem to have gotten most of the Spire in - including the top!!! Not bad considering the Spire is something like a third the height of the Eiffel tower, well it's 120 m tall anyway!!!Check out this website for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spire_of_Dublin

Hi Lizzy,

yeah it's called a lot of things alright! Erection at the Intersection, spire in the mire, the stiffy near the liffy, etc. etc. etc. I've got a web link (I think) in the "about" section for this photo where there are more names for it!

Anyway, to infinity and beyond!!!

Hi Daithi, wonderful click you got there. Works wonderfuly well in infrared.
Recently I took a Dublin bus tour. The guide showed the spire and said "Errection at the intersection". The next day I went out to get an image for his view. I did get one. But its not as good as your pic. Please take a look. It will be interesting.

I love this picture, it's brilliantly phallic!!
Thank you for your enthusiastic comments about 'My Brick Wall'! I actually took it off the site because I didn't like it, but because you enjoyed its daftness so much I have now put it back on!

Daithi, This is an excellent shot reminiscent of photos of the 20's. What I mean is that it combines hard metallic with a soft quality atmosphere. The strong metal highlights are in contrast to the whispy clouds that surround it. Lenses of the 20's and before were soft. Our new modern lenses are too sharp to give you this quality. But the softness of IR film restores this quality and gives that metallic glow its real beauty. Perhaps a bit of fine tuning could be achieve in post processing to tone down the highlights (blown out) and balance the contrast. But, again, the beauty of this picture is not just the composition, it is really that soft tonalty of IR that works here. Best regards, John
