Glad you asked mate. It's a hole in the bottom of a cliff. We aren't sure if people were imprisoned or housed there temporarily. Certainly they had been arrested and sent here and built a road along the coast of our harbour.
Some had been involved in a passive protest at a place called parihaka over crown confiscation of maori land. A friend has just told me they were imprisoned and that some died. Actually my father always used to tell me this particular incident had a strong touch of the Ghandis about it but he knew of this particular event and it was one of his inspirations.
