About Well, I know my camera isn't that great, but I love taking pictures, and I know you guys will probably laugh at the type of camera, and the fact that it's a digital, but for me, it's the best I can get. Plus, I think it looks great...any creative criticism would help me...thanks

The picture is very good, very attractive, especially the colors of the flower. Could it be improved? I believe the answer is yes, but it requires some work. Next time try to take the same picture 3 times in a row at about one hour intervals, in the last 3 hours before sunset. Like right now it would be at 4:30, 5:30, and 6:30 PM. Then compare the 3 pictures and draw your own conclusions as to when you got the best shot.
Shooting while the sun is up in the sky is rather difficult, even the pros don't succeed very well, because some area will be overexposed and another underexposed. In your picture it looks as if the center of the flower is overexposed.
I wish you good luck and lots of patience, Alex

Well...a lot of people have been saying "well the middle of the picture is white" Honestly, I really like it white, in fact, I would have chose this picture over the a one where you can see the inside....

And the middle isn't totally white...I managed to recover this interesting feater by burning about 65 times the original :) Just thought you guys would wanna see what you didn't before :)

Like a lot the selective focus, DOF is really great here so is the lightning. Cheers

Brian, thanks for your comment. For this lovely pic here, I second Luther's idea about cropping and darkening the background. But the overexposure is really good here, for me the white in the flower actually makes the image.

The photo is better than average.

The DOF is well controlled and allows the fence in the background and leaves to almost disappear with few PS post processing enhancements. External highlights (on the adjacent leaves) and fence can be minimized with cropping to an almost square photo and darkening.

However, due to initial overexposure, the interior of the flower cannot be recovered and remains 'white'.

Very striking image. It looks as thought light is flooding out of the center of the flower. Very good.

Brian,
Thank you so much for every comment you have given my photos! It means so much to me! I need to learn too. I do have an F-5 now but learning is so tricky I almost want to grab up my old 35, and I tell you I got some awesome shots with it over the years so dont put to much emphasis on the camera. I'm just wanting to get into professional work like weddings and such so I had to get a good camera.
This shot is beautiful. I love the light especially! Sunlight is wonderful. The bright color is wonderful as well, stands out so well. Good job!

Brian, Liked the photo and thought colors were great. Maybe blur the leaf in the upper right a little to bring out the flower some more. Would have liked to see some more details/contrast in the center of the flower. It looks a little washed out.

Normally, I'd say blown-out highlights are a mistake, but the way the white in the center lacks detail...it almost appears as if it is radiating light! Very beautiful and sharp.

...and don't develop a complex about having a 'digital camera'. The most important tool is what lies just behind the eyes. ;)

Keep shooting, Brian!

Hi Brian, great photo - pictures like these convince me to look into digital camaras (I am sort of consevative about this). You should also check out similar shots taken by Vernon Louw. Thanks for your comment about the electric lightning - visit Cape Town (South Africa) and see/hear one of them fly...beautifull. regards - jaco

Brian, who cars about the camera make. One should know that its not the camra which is primarily responsible for a photo, its the eye behind the view finder that does the trick. So dont worry about the camera, you love taking picture and thats what matters most. Fantastic shot, by the way ! Congratulations.

Hi Brian! There is good news and bad news. The good news is that you like nature and above all you perceive its emotional appeal - flowers talk to you and you want to tell about it to the rest of the world. The composition is OK - not a revelation but good. The major problem is the lighting. The leaves on the both sides of the flower are distracting. Just imagine how beautiful your becture could have been with the dark green background. I believe that your camea (of which you should not be ashamed) has a b/w option - or you can choose it in your PC. Colors (or colours, if you are British) could be betraying. So to check up a dubious composition one should turn the image into b/w, and if it still works, it's ok. Just look what happened to your beautiful image when greyscaled. So what should we do? Honestly - serious photographers just wait for the right moment of the day and only then shoot.

Thanks for your comment on my Valentine picture. Speaking of good lighting, the lighting on your flower is great. It looks like the sun is shining out of the center of it. Good job!

Oh Brian, thankyou for you very very sweet comment on my butterfly photo! Made me very happy that you liked it so much! :-))

This is a wonderful photo! Not "just" a flower, it's so much more! The light is really fantastic... so warming and strong! And it lits up the flower in a magic way. The lilac colour of the flower is really so beautiful! Also focus is excellent, and the diagonal out of dof background looks great! Very good!

Sunny afternoon after a glorious morning, I suspect. I particularly like the crosshatching of the fence in the background.
One of the beauties of digital seems to be the very high quality images available even from a low-end camera. My two most recent uploads here were taken with a cheapo-matic Visioneer camera (from a maker of cheap scanners, I believe) that has been no end of trouble since I received it, yet I am very pleased with the quality of its images. Keep at it Brian, the fun's in the pursuit. Regards. -Tim

First off, it's not the equipment the photographer has but the eye for composition. Let me tell you, you got it in this picture. The composition, color, details. It's all there. Keep putting up pictures like this!! Good job
Keep up the good work
Kevin
