This works exteremely well! Very very nice work. This should have received more attention. The subtleties of the shading and blending are excellent.

Hi Becky - in my backwards way of doing this, the moon sits in a layer on top of the flower. While I see the value of having the moon align with the rim of the petals, the dark separation is actually present in the real flower (look on the right hand side). It does look very dissociated from the flower this way however... Thanks for the comments!

I agree the bit of separation between the moon and petals has got to go. This may or may not work, but what I would do is take the original sunflower and copy it onto a second layer. Using a freehand select tool (lasso tool in PS) and an infinite amount of patience, draw your select line around the core of the second layer flower. If you can't get a perfect outline, you can try cheating it by feathering the selection 1-5 pixels. Delete the core of the layer two sunflower. Import your moon and sandwich it between the two flowers. (You actually don't need the original flower layer - I just keep it around for blending purposes or if something goes awry.)
By the way, I really like how you've blended the sunflower's core into the dark side of the moon - really nice touch!

stefan, you are so quick!!! I can't believe how fast you turned this out! I agree that it would have a more impact if more background could be seen... unfortunately I don't have any shots wider than this.... (I'll check my slides, though) so you might have to wait until summer after all. Still, you awe me with your PS skills and the pace you work at!

Interesting... Have you tried to unfocus(?) the background, maybe with motion blur, or something alike, to create volume?? I?m sure you can do even better! Hugs my dear friend!!!

Stefan,
I just wanted to get back to you on the pinhole thing...you are right. One slight problem I've been dealing with right now is the dark, gloomy, cold weather. So far, I've never been a good situation where I could use a tripod - to cold, not allowed, etc... (I need spring)...so I've had to resort to higher ISOs and higher shutter speeds. I hope to remedy that when the weather warms...
negative farenheit temps are just too cold...

Wow Stefan how did you do dat? This is wonderful and the colours mmmm... you know sunflowers are my favourites (?) and you know also that anything spaced out tickles my fancy, yeah I think you know that already teehee. So the combination of the two here really make me happy. Hey, I have no idea what anyone is talking about... I'm bottom of the class with PS and I have only Corel PS and a crappy version.. all I'm saying is your image pleases my eyes :) Cherie

Sandy - I think you are saying that the dark edge around the petals around the moon should go so that they don't look so cut-and-pasty... Problem is when I blur the mask that is exactly what happens, maybe erode is what I need. Also don't have PS, I'm using PSP8 for this.
Mary - I agree with you, if the deep field is to be in the background, one needs see more of it. One problem is that this is the full frame of the sunflower, might need another shot... On pulling out the petals - after finishing this I thought that putting a sun in the center would probably be a better match, the petals can be protuberances :-)
Thank you all for the comments and suggestions.

Stefan,
Good idea - I would suggest two things. First, back off a bit on the flower and give it more distance so we can see the Hubble background. Second, Expand the mood just a bit and let the flower petals overlay it and then do as Sandy suggested.
I would also suggest that if you feel creative, you could pull some of the petals out and blur them like flames into the background feel - this could be quite fun...

Coolio! Such a hot idea! PS. Thanks for the advice (fengshui box). I think it works fine with the black center. I might do a repost later on.
