About Finally found one of these scanners at B&H before the rebate deadline ran out. Managed to scan a few old negatives and slides before I got terribly busy. Now that I have some time, the scanner is acting up and tech support has been summoned. In the mean time, here are some I managed to scan.

Taken with available light in my front yard. Hand held.

Roger, I didn't have to black out the background, it was quite dark as it is. The exposure range was great enough that exposing for the backlighting caused just the right level of underexposure for the background. It's just as well for the background mulch would have been very noisy.

I got the Nikon Coolscan IV ED which, as I found out on usefilm, is being replaced by the Coolscan V. Hence the $200 rebate offer. I'm still waiting for my check from Nikon as well as for tech support to contact me. Let's see which comes first;-)

Did you black out the background or was it that dark? It really does give a nice emphasis to the flower, which would otherwise perhaps have looked rather too dark itself. Which scanner did you get?
