Thanks a Anne, I was going for this effect. I thought of this as the "opposite / reverse" of making the face darker and merge with a black bg and such.
I have seen paintings like these and I have tried the same with camera.
On the other hand, As you were saying, maybe a bit contrast to define the side line of the face would have helped. Will try.

i like what you were trying to do here. the relaxed pose is great and the sepia toning i think works well. however, i guess the space on the right that sort of blends into her face doesn't work as well for me. if somehow the contours of that side of her face were more distinguishable, i think it would work better. how? maybe less flash? not sure...good pic, though...
