Phillip, you mentioned that you're not sure what attracts you to this style of portraiture. I don't know about you but for me the look of this style is much like the old master portrait painters from another century which I use to study closely since a youth. My original hobbie of oil painting is what led me to photography and studying the works of 17th and 18th century masters left quite an impression on me and greatly influences my taste in this direction. I still need a couple suitable backgounds and props to seriously persue this type of work. Soon.

Phillip Stewart Charis (http://www.phillipstewartcharis.com/) has mastered this style quite well. I just happened to stumble across his studio/gallery on Hwy 74 near San Juan Capistrano one day and knew that I just had to do this one day.

The samples on his website are nowhere near the color and tone of his originals that are on display in his gallery. Quite a few of his 3/4 length portraits are lifesize and are magnificent to see. Obviously large format. Digital will soon be able to match this image quality at that size. Many of his images have been published in a nice, large hardcover book which I'm sure you'd enjoy viewing should you ever get you hands on a copy of it.

This photo of yours is actually a splendid example of this style. As good as it gets.

Well styled and perfectly executed portrait. Top rate in all categories. I know this is not an original idea but...I don't get the whole purpose of having "originality" as a category for measuring the value of any photograph with few exceptions. Not many among us who can claim an original idea with zillions of examples already on display. Besides, what might seem original to me may be commonplace to someone else and even everyone else.

It's just that there are no flaws in this photograph and the rating should reflect that.

One question Phillip, is there a background light or is it being lit by the main only?

Hi Phillip,

One of the best children's portraits I've seen in a long long while.

Simply superb.

Stylistically perfect.

Best wishes,

David

Thanks all. Much too kind. I really wish I knew why I want to shoot images as these. I would shoot work like this all day, if I had the bodies to work with. ;) I love this style of portraiture, but don't know where it comes from?

Phillip, a precious little girl, beautifully captured. Love the warm golden lighting and beautiful placement and pose. Great work as always. I have been VERY busy with family problems, but hope to get some shooting done soon. Thanks for continuing to be an inspiration to me. Your studio work is stunning.
