Fender bass... perfect capture of concentration... few realize that the bass and drums are the heart of a good band. Fantastic composition, I.would.change.nothing.
Instant favorite.

Hey Jim,
Really like this high contrasty B&W litho looking stuff. I do alot of this myself when I can get into a darkroom somewhere to play. Pretty soon, not to many people are going to remember what a darkroom is, I'm afraid. "Digi" is taking over the world... :-} Take care. Laurie

Hey John!
Thanks for the comment on one of my concert shoots. You've asked me for my thought on this specific picture and I'm happy to "assist" you in this matter.
It is awesome! and shows everything you need for a great picture. The contrast and the comp is great, there is enough room to create a mood (I'm not a friend of close crops) and I love the silhouette.
Its minor, but since you ask me, I will mention it. I'm not so sure about his right shoulder. I'm thinking about removing it completely or showing a bit more details of his upper body. Don't know if you have more details on the original one.
But again a striking picture and I DO LOVE IT!!!
Cheers! Carlheinz

Very nice! I like the intensity in his face. I see this often in master musicians.

Ooooh - Very good. What film was this?

Deb Mayes   {K:19605} 4/9/2003
Striking photo - I actually don't mind it being off center, since it gives him space to gaze into, and there's enough of the bass there to let us know what he's doing. Different strokes ... :)

Well, I was hoping you weren't besmerching his character by claiming he was 'base'. lol

Sue, how right you are I must have had a brain freeze that day. Thank you for keeping me straight.

And the instrument is a "bass", not a "base".

Hi Jim. Yup... works for me just like it is. Just superb! High contrast really suits the subject well. The tonal compression adds to a really graphic shot and reduces the chance to look at anything other than the musician and his intrument, which is so obviously a base guitar from the string count and size. Caught while playing in mid rif with intense concentration. Barely enough detail to discern in the face means no distracting thoughts about who is this. It is a great shot and I wish it were my work.

Cheers!
Jeff

Thanks, Sue for your words of wisdom, I'll keep that in mind next time I do a shot like this, unfortunately the head of the base was cut off in the original.
Thanks again,
Jim

Post Script: As for Dave's expression its always intense when he's playing, thats why I like photographing him.

Sorry, I meant "equal importance to his instrument".

I like the effect of the high contrast; it adds a bit of drama to his intense expression.

IMHO, I think that it would be a better image if you had included the entire head of the bass and taken a little off the left side, off centering his face and putting him in equal proportion to his instrument. Just my feeling.
