he was my childhood "hero"...i even have a large plastic toy car when he used to drive the yellow nascar (sorry for my lack of knowledge, hehe)...sigh...

When I shot this I thought it was just another wreck. Afterwards I watched the replay from the boom camera for the national TV coverage right behind me. I saw that they were still working on getting Dale out of the car, and I knew something was wrong. I ran around to where the car had come to a rest and continued shooting. When they got Dale out of the car they were doing chest compressions all the way to the ambulance. When the track officials covered the car with a tarp, I knew then what I had just photographed. A bitter sweet photograph indeed.

Whoa! THIS is a capture and a half man! A famous image for sure. And to think of all the turmoil that is going on at that moment. Great work on this one.....
