I'm working on a project at the moment that needs a fair amount of B&W portraiture, which is really not my field, so I thought I'd get some practice in! This is my father, taken mid conversation. I wanted to keep the composition tight with plenty of eye room, just focusing on the main features. I did do a little bit of touching up in PS, mainly a touch of burn on the right cheek, dodged the eyes, and removed a few heavy reflections from the eyes. I know this is not the most innovative shot but I really would appreciate some feedback because I start shooting next week (gulp!)
Yep, I hear you! I wanted something tight, but in retrospect its a bit unballanced, I think for this to work completely I needd to give as much 'margin' to the bottom of the mouth as to the top of the eyes. Having said that, on my rare sojourns into the world of portraiture I've shot a roll on a subject and eventually selected the one I like most, in this case I shot a total of three frames each on ma' and pa'!
Well the only thing i personalu don?t like (my personal taste of course) is the tight crop in the chin area. You mentioned that was your intention so... Besides that, it?s a great B&W portrait!! Love the contrast and DOF and specially your father?s eye expression! Wekk done!
oh oh by the way, I read your comments here and there, and i really like what i see! (:
