Ursula,

Hi again. I thought I'd try to get in at least one review a week and I just happened to have some time so here goes. Again, this is just my interpretation, take it with a grain of salt; my tendancy for loquaciousness should in no manner be construed to be knowledge or skill.

Composition -
I selected this shot out of your gallery because it, too, demonstrates your artistic eye. This photo uses less emotionally complicated elements but it contains facets that show how you have an eye for original and inspiring shots. I would suggest cropping this photo differently so as to not dilute the presentation. To my eye the lighting works up until the egg begins to pickup solid shadows (sadly I'm not at my computer or I'd take a shot at cropping this to show you what I mean). Cutting into the wisk is not a bad idea as it appears to me to be the interloper into this composition on multiple levels. Firstly it is manmade rather than organic in nature. Secondly it seems to originate near the light source and enter the composition in the direction of the egg. Lastly, its truest impact (to me as the viewer) is contrast to the egg; both in the smooth, almost-straight lines of shadow that are cast on the surface of the egg and the brightly reflective or totally dark angles of each loop vis~a~vis the evenly colored eggshell. Cutting into the egg on the other hand presents a problem for me. Either the egg should be presented in whole; as an organic, complete element of the composition or it should be cut off near the line of demarcation for the shadow. Either way you emphasize different qualities of the egg. With the whole egg it shows the complete non-manufactured object in contrast to the beater. If you decide to bisect the egg at the line of shadow, you emphasize the color and texture of the eggshell in contrast to that smoothness I mentioned in the wisk earlier. As it stands, this is a better than average photo of these two subjects but I think that is due to your basic artistic nature and the way you see objects (more on this in the Lighting section).

Color -
As mentioned under the composition, the only colors in the composition appear to be an off white or eggshell color. If the background is a lighter or darker color you did a good job in post shot processing to blend it and the egg into a similar color. The use of such a homogenous color pattern helps to emphasize the "belongingness" of the egg over the interjection of the wisk.

Lighting -
This part of your photo goes a long way towards demonstrating the innate way you tend to view shots before you take them. The lighting you used in this composition is not something that could easily be added in post shot production; it had to be setup before. Whether you put much thought into the design and location of your light source or whether you just set the light down and said, "Well, that'll do." you showed how you see the interplay of your subjects and their lighting. You put enough lighting on the background to allow the top edge of the egg to showup while not overpowering the egg's color or blowing out its texture. You emphasized the bright, reflective loops of the metal wisk without casting too harsh a glare on the egg's surface and crushing the organic feel it generates in the photo. For this photo, the lighting you used is probably the strongest element in helping me as a viewer to have a feeling about this shot.

Focus -
The focus for this shot is spot on. Not too overdone. You allow the uneven egg to feel uneven rather than plastic with too much sharpening. You allow the light and dark edges of each metallic loop to define the wisk rather than creating visual artifacts by oversharpening. Good job with the focus.

Overall -
Whether you meant any of the things I saw in the elements of the photo or whether they were subconcious decisions on your part, I think you showed that you have a talent for seeing something and photographing it so that your viewer(s) can partake in a similar experience. The subjects you chose are mundane; who doesn't have an egg and some type of beater. The layout and lighting you chose and the coloration you created (or enhanced) show that you have a creative way of not only seeing objects but of presenting them to others through your photographic work. Again, I personally would like to see a little less of the shadowed side of the egg to provide greater emphasis to the contrast between the smooth coloration of the egg and the harsh, manufactured reflections of the wisk but you have done a great job with everyday objects.

Congratulations on a job well done.

Kev

An egg-cellent still life, Ursula! That contraption on the right looks very menacing. Stil, you know what they say 'You can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs'.This looks very nice in black and white, with a wide range of grey tones....Many thanks for your comments. Best wishes. David
