Susan, you are right, now that you have mentioned it, I can remember that they were, indeed, chains.
I feel a bit stupid forgetting what was in my own photo!!
thanks for the message.

Sarah.

I assumed that the grooves were from sailboat ballast, but I realise now that the sand/mud must have been pretty soft if the sailboats left behind settled their ballasts in without damage. If it's that soft, ballast grooves wouldn't have remained intact.

Are they anchor chains?

Wayne, I think the black stripes in the sand were just grooves, and on film they showed up as black.
I'm sure the horizon is straight. Here, the buildings are on the horizon, and they are upright! The horizon on the sea line is actually around the corner.

Sarah.

Yeah, just a bit of a joke. I have a bit of a problem with unlevel horizons, but I can't actually tell with this image. By the way, what are the black "stripes" in the sand/mud ? They add interest to the shot.

Thanks for the comment Wayne.
I didn't quite understand what you meant about the horizon, I take it you were having a bit of a joke!!

I like it without the water - you don't have to worry about reflections !

I know, the horizon wasn't level and all the water ran out.
