Hi and thank you all for the nice comments. I appreciate it alot, even though I forgot to say so ;-) Dear Kathleen, thanks for analyzing the photo. It was really interesting to read your thoughts. Regarding my words, I dont agree with them myself, but I thought they were funny, so it goes well with the humor category. I think its great the couple made you think of the connection between the two, thats what I like about the photo myself, the archtype (or general) posture of the man and woman. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I'm also happy you chose this photo to continue the debate from the forum, because it is a good example. I agree with you that it can be annoying not knowing whether a photo is fake or not, and sometimes if the photographer tries to pass it as being real, I end up not liking the photo however great it looks. In this case, I thought I didnt have to explain that the sky was altered. I've never seen such a black sky, and I'd be surprised if anyone had. I didnt add anything that wasnt already there though. I emphasized the dramatic sky with only the burn/dodge photoshop tools, tools which has been used throughout time in wet darkrooms. Why did I do it, if the photo could go without? Because my taste dictated it *wink* I am a sucker for drama, and the sky symbolizes my view on the connection between the couple. I appreciate the chance to explain myself, dont be affraid to critize Kathleen. Thats what we all came here for....
best regards, Lars.
PS. This is the untouched photo (though desaturated) without the burn/dodging.

Hi Lars! Not sure about your words, but i love the image. i really do, photoshop enhancements notwithstanding *wink* This shot of the ordinary couple at a beach, their posture and body language suggesting not so much intimacy as resigned acceptance. Maybe even ambivalence. Yet, still the man holds the umbrella, shelters the woman, does his part, takes his responsibilities seriously. Yet she stands still, immobile. i wonder if she appreciates him, if she loves him. A disturbing image. Not sure, seriously, that you needed all those clouds. The sky has rather run amuck here although it contributes greatly to textures. i think your subject is so strong and so well captured that you could have foregone all that extra fluff behind them.
Come to think of it, that's the problem with Photoshop. Maybe those clouds were there. Maybe it was a mircale of lighting and weather and cold human interaction that makes this image so powerful. Yet, knowing your love of enhancement, i immediately disregarded half the sky as fiction. How unfortunate that we look at an amazing image and wonder, was it real? Was he lucky enough to be there to capture this, or was it a good moment made miraculous with computer software? i am not criticizing you, this is an extremely effective image, Lars..but i'm thinking out loud, for myself..thinking about my own personal approach to image making.
Wonderful work..best regards: kat~
