Thanks folks. This little pup is used to photos being taken, however; the smile she had was produced and fake. I did take some of her laughing when I was picking at her.
She had just gotten through with a pic, and looked off for a bit. I watched her, and then spoke her name with a "bit" of tone to it, thus the shot.
Deer in headlights was my gut response. I have never worked with children, so I cannot appreciate the work that goes into getting kids to relax, have fun, and be natural. However, it looks like more work needed to be done to get her to relax.
The clasped hands creates tension for me which shouldn't be there in a child's portrait. Having the hands in a more natural, relaxed manner would work better for me.
I think a more complementary color to the purple in her dress would work better for the background.
