thank you all for your insight and comments. Fortunately, our goats or sheep eat these so we have very few making it to this stage. These get mown after the animals leave the pasture.

Greg, For sure a nuisance in farm/cattle country. I lived in Missouri for 18 years and if they were left alone, they would take over farm fields and cattle pasture very quickly. They have a pretty purple flower but try to pull them out and their stems are thorny. The roots have to be dug out of use some kind of weed killer like Round-up.

These scotch thistles are nuisance weeds but have a ver pretty flower.
