Andy, I find the only distractions to be the one bud and the dead stem farther left. The lighting on this is fabulous! The way the light went up the middle of the center petal is awesome! I can live with that background. It is all a matter of taste and you will never please everyone, so please yourself, it will be your style. So what if it is not what everyone else wants. You don't see a lot of raving over my pics but I know what I want in an image and I usually get it. Few people understand the way I think. I usually do try to blur my backgrounds because they are nothing you would want to see. But also, I shoot most of my flowers outside, where there is almost always a breeze. Therefore I must shoot wide open to get the image sharp. When the person said my out of focus petals were not good (can't recall his words), he did not realize how bad the image would have been if the whole flower was sharp. You cannot have that kind of DOF without pulling in too much of the background. The only other thing that would really make your image speak is water droplets on the petals. I think you did a pretty good job, and probably have not been shooting anywhere near as long as I have!

Love the backlight on those translusive petals, the diagnoal composition, dof, and colors. Great. To make this a greatest, my suggestion is to create a some kinda even background. especially for subject like these - Isolate the subject so that you would get some nice and even colors in the bg, the subject would appear as if it jumps out the picture. Just some thots.

Overall this is a great picutre.

Elangs.

Very, very nice. I might've cropped the flower a little tighter and closer to its lower-left petal, just for a good diagonal line across the photo. Good capture! Did you see my Lily, by the way?
