About This is a Bald Eagle just starting to mature. The wings still have some of the light feathers on them and the tail still has part of the dark feathers in it. Shot near sunset tonight.
be well, Stan

Harry, the sad part was this was done sober. I think that when I cropped it first before I did anything else and that was part of my problem. Was just glad to get a shot off!!

Thanks a lot for the info about the shot and the attachment, Stan! Well, its blueish tint certainly adds something to the overall atmosphere of wintertime but not much can be done here to "save" the original from low contrast. If you raise it you do also raise noise, which by itself is not necesserily bad but in this case it also affects the bird very strongly up to the point of turning it almost invisible. The exposure was too low here. (You can also see that by raising contrast and noticing how visible the vignetting-like effect turns. This is also on the original but it remains almost unnoticable because of the low contrast.) The low details on the bird are just because of that. If you have them they are too weak in contrats in order to be visible. If you raise contrast the bird goes black.

The T90 could make some good shots of such subjects under that light, if the very capable light metering system is used according to what one wants to do. I would only recomment nit using doublers and similar things since they always lower the quality of optics. The lenses are really designed and optimized for being used in their region of focal distance. But your 300mm should alrealy be strong enough for taking images of wild life, I think.

BTW, enthusiasm is good, but nobody plays like an Eddie Van halen without exercise and dedication for raising skills. So I wish you all possible fun and all possible discoveries with your camera that comes soon.

Cheers!

Nick

Hi Nick, when I get that $2500 Canon 400mm L lens from you for Christmas I will show you all the detail you can stand!!! HEHEHE!!! I am including my full camera shot with the 300mm Sigma DG $189 lens at sunset. This is not the standard for wildlife lenses but I have it and I am using it until I can upgrade to some fine glass. I am glad you liked my effort at my crop to the thirds rule.
I like the comment of the quiet flight of this majestic bird. He was coming in for a landing in the tree that they roost in across from my house.
The noise is not as bad in the full shot. I am going to try my T90 with some 400 film and a doubler on the 70-210mm lens for some shots as well. Thanks for your great comment and your encouragement. Your honesty is very appreciated. What I lack in skill I make for in enthusiasm!!
Be well,Stan

The Whole Picture

Nick Karagiaouroglou Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:127263} 12/25/2008
Good contrast between the background in a grain-like noise and the eagle itself in a more clear look. I wished I could see somemore details of its feathers.

But it does stand out both for giving us the immediate impression that it is in front of the background, as also for being at a very beneficial position of thirds in both directions of the image.

Though it flies there is something very quiet on the whole image. Exactly as the flight of the eagle - almost no sound as it "hovers" in the wind.

Cheers!

Nick

Thanks Dave, glad you liked it. This Bald is probably from last year crop. They love stopping here and feasting on the Bison Harvest left overs. They are definitely opportunist when it comes to an easy meal!!

Thanks Shirley, I caught the light just right on this one. I was waiting for him to turn towards the last of the sunlight and caught him when the tail was illuminated in my view finder. All my military training with panning optics served me well. Glad you liked this.

Thanks so much Mitra. My Kaden is really excited about opening those presents. His birthday is the 29th as well. He will be 5. I got him a Spider Man Bike for his birthday. I should put chains on it the way the weather has been. Glad you liked my Eagle shot. Not great but the idea is there. Just could not edit the noise out of it. My best to you for Christmas.
Be well, Stan
