Hi Rich,
For the money you can’t beet the Canon 400 f5.6, it is slow light wise and it will not auto focus well using the 1.4 extender with my 40D. I shoot wide open most of the time and it is very sharp and fast focusing. I wish it had stabilization as I do need to use my flash often. The IQ is great but not as good as the very high end lenses. As for my 40D the noise is no problem at 400iso and with the correct exposure very acceptable at 800iso, I think the 50D is just as good or better.

Ken I am thinking of getting this lens. Do you miss IS on it? You seeem to have your shooting under control. I have a 300mm F/4L IS.I shot FF on a 5D and need more range. How is the noise level on the 40D? I went to the 5D beacuase my 30D had too much...rich_swanner@comcasst.net Thanks Rich......
