About Not the 45 rpm record... the little round thingie that let the record set true on the spindle... REemember those/these things? I needed one a few weeks back and could not find any... anywhere. Then, days later, I turned up a whole nest in a drawer. Sorry about having to use an ABBA record... the next best choice was Lynn Anderson...

Oh, him! He's been here since the *first* time I left because of the "attaboy" club. It's the same comment he's always cut and pasted, except I think his spelling has improved.

I must say, tho, that his photography seems to have improved as well.

The thing that astonished me when I first joined in '02, (yes, a different time, a different place), is that, even tho I didn't have a lot of experience, my having to collect my thoughts and write an impression about someone else's image made *me* a better photographer (me, me, me, it's all about me!). It forced me to stop and look at someone else's presentation and decide what I did or didn't like about it and made me think "How would I have done that?"
So far, I have had two thought-proving comments from other people, one who sounded a teeny bit spiteful but made an accurate observation all the same, and another who's rework pointed out something I had gotten distracted away from noticing. I haven't given up entirely on this community, and I'm certainly ALWAYS glad to see your wonderful images.
Thanks tons, Jim!
Cheers!

Perfect example of what I was saying... read the comment 7++++++
http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1457583

Yes, I would not change a pixel of the image no matter who comments... but that is not the point. Here is a comment that screams, "Passing through." Nothing more to offer. Now Roj... he is ok. Roger posts in a vastly different vein as me... yet we are connected. When it comes to style we are direct opposites... when it comes to photgraphic theory... we are linked at the hip. Roger is one ya can study and fall in wiff.

I see my last 4 comments on UF have all been to you. Sorry for taking up yer time. I just had a lot to say. I will be a good boy now.

Nope… ya won’t get it here. I hear what ya are saying… here is what I have seen through the years… people have 2 stances: 1) I know better than you what you should have done. 2) I don’t care what you post… look at what I did!!!! The first person does not give good critique because they are looking through their own glasses and forcing their view on others. The second type cannot give a true critique because they are too self absorbed. Hmmm…. Now that I think a bit on it… there is a third type: 3) People who just love photography and share what they have seen and will honestly critique and comment because of a touch of professionalism. I fall into that 3rd category… and there are VERY few folks in the room wiff me. I know my camera. I know my limits. I understand perspective and POV and aperture and shutter speed and ISO and all that… and I also know that a great or even good or even average image has more to do with thought and angle and intention than specific settings. No… I will say it again and again and again and again……. you will not get help here. Just bits of comments. I will say this to you… I will critique you fairly. I will say what I see and what I understand… and if you are up to it (and I am sober… or more important… interested) I will comment fairly and honestly. I am not a genius when it comes to photography… I just understand balance and perspective. I will help/advise you the best I can. Other than that… buckle up and prepare for most general comments like: “Very nice!” “Good work!” “Well seen.” “This would also look good in B/W!”… My technical strengths are low… my eye is wonderful. If you want suggestions, I will oblige ya. But take no offense in what I say and take to heart nothing I offer. It will just be as I see and balance it. As for my pics… I do not look for advice, and at times when it appears… I reject it. When I post, I post what I want the world to see. The image I toss up is the final product. No advice or suggestion or help will help. My post is the final form. Did this help? Please do not stop posting… you have some very interesting pics. But understand, very few folks will comment with intelligence.

Just saying….

Jim, I'm a glutton for punishment. I keep thinking I'm back when Usefilm members helped each other with thought provoking comments. I learned a whole lot back in 2002-2004, but having forgotten a lot of it, I'm looking for it again. Think I'll get it? :)

Well, Sue... You are welcome! I don't remember a lot about you (then again I am old and such) but I do so remember the pic of you in the mud with the light/lamps cleverly placed. Welcome back... and remember... shoot what you love... the heII wiff what the world thinks.

Heck, I even had some made of pot metal, and if that doesn't date me, then think of me as just an antiques collector! hahahaha

It's a very good shot there, Jim. The backlighting is perfect, showing just enough of the title label to nudge the memory. Thanks for both the delightful image AND the memory.
