About	Through photoshop I put Union troops onto the battlefield near the Henry House at Bull Run. The battle was 147 years ago this July 21st. The first battle of the American Civil War, it was expected to be brief and glorious. It was neither. Nine Hundred men died - only the first of over 600,000 souls who perished between 1861 and 1865.

I've just been reading about the Civil War and its effect on American thought and institutions. The slaughter was apparently the result of using troop charge tactics from the era of muskets with an effective 80-yard range in the era of rifles with an effective 400-yard range.
