About	One of the Maple trees on our place is in full green. Mike Kelly... I do not think I have ever, ever, ever spoken of him on UF... or even in the ramblings to The Battered Few. I first met Mike 15 years ago… he was already in retirement and I was 35. He bought odds and ends auto parts off me at my place of business. He was Irish. Short. Smiling. Clever… and terribly, painfully likeable. He had a piece of land in Ottawa, IL you could water with a good spit. Nothing much… but it was his place. He grew a variety of vegetables but more than any other… cucumbers. And he made pickles. He had known me for a few years when it slipped out I had grapes on the Loy-Wood place. He argued and pleaded and proselytized, “Grape leaves are needed to make great pickles!” I took him some grape leaves… he made pickles… they were……… average. And in return he gave me 3 Maple trees to plant on my land. They were less than 3 feet (1 meter) tall when I jabbed them into the ground. Over the years I had to take one down (kill it by axe) because it was too close to a garage I was building. The other 2 are doing just fine. This is one of the 2 surviving Maple trees Mike Kelly gave me because I passed over to him a few grape leaves… for pickle making. Mike is gone these 7 years. I do not miss his pickles... I do miss him.

big fecker for it ages eh... cripes it must be good soil u r on.. I have an english oak which has been in for twenty five years... it about 3' across at the base... GFM
