I think that at the end your decision was completely right, Sandip. For me, as somebody that can only see the scene through your image, too much would be lost of the scene if that piece of sky wouldn't be there. Without it we only have a format filling almost flat something with no real reference to the scene in which it is embdedded.

Many times such small things near the corners/edges of the photo seem to be not necessary at first sight, but the experiment of cropping them off shows how important they are. In this case I notice also the following: Without that piece of sky the wall acts like a barrier. But with it it acts as a barrier that the spectator tends to wish to jump over, to overcome, to see more of that open sky. So it could be also named a small "appetizer", much like some kind of a little detail of a story that makes the listener wanting to know the whole story. It adds much tension.

I find also your mental argueing at shooting time a very important thing. It is that kind of care against a too quick view that only scratches the surface of some given subject, and towards a more thorough study of it.

Cheers!

Nick

Thank you very much, Nick. Yes you hit the bull's eye. The question was whether to include the sky or not. I don't think cropping is the correct option (as you mentioned it reduces the height perspective), i had to decide it while shooting.

I'll try jot my points, firstly, i'm all in agreement that the sky does not add much as balance/subject-component/visual-effects.

However, imo (i'm usually wrong :)) it only adds one component -- disturbance. it was a mellow evening with a grey/blue sky and the tungsten orange provided an opportunity to put the urban perspective into the scene(along with color constrasts). However, while shooting i had to put the sky part (using diagonals which are my favs) because otherwise it would've become a suffocating yet beautiful scene. The tension/disgust/visual disturbance won't be there (again imo) and that was my only motivation to add the sky part.

I argued your points with my self while shooting and again while presenting. Now i'm actually present my case to you ... what say ?

Thanks and Regards,
-sandip

This one has something so pleasantly depressing, Sandip! Hues and perpective, some fine grain-like appearance, and the merciless patterns on the concrete wall make it look much like a view of some prison in the night. But also some element of latent action is present, as I expect something to happen, much like in introductory scenes of novels turned to movies. Still and action get married in my mind!

The light on the bottom left adds more to that muddy, rusty, dusty atmosphere, and it stands in good color contrast to the rest of the image. I am also very impressed by the many details on the wall under the low light conditions.

Only that piece of sky at the top right... I can't really say if it is strong enough as a reference to the height of that wall. It does make it visible that the wall is huge though. As a side note in that, a tighter crop weakens the impression of that height (attachment).

Great work on a minimum of ingredients. Such images show that anything can be the subject for a good image, if only captured the appropriate way!

Cheers!

Nick
