I appreciated your links and had a great time browsing your work! I find that a photographic work is not finished until it is printed - the preparation and printing may well be more than 50% of the work. Having said that, I find that usefilm is a repository for unfinished photographs! In my case most are not worth printing, 'though. ;-) Cheers!

Eb,

I appreciate your taking the time to view this image from Ceasare, Spain. Yes, the 8x10 is much finer in detail than this thumbnail, but taken in 1992 it was during the days of dial-up and small scans were the thing of the day. I only recently pulled this image out of my archive, and have never re-scanned it. The detail in the bricks and steps still is obvious to me....and even small carries the impact of what I wanted to capture. It is my opinion that any photograph should be judged small, and upside down. Working with an 8x10 or 11x14 camera, and making contact prints of the same size, I am used to high quality small images. I have never had an image over my 11x14 camera size. Principally 8x10, which is what most of what I post is printed in. I find that most USEFILM photographers don't even print their work. they are monitor based. I have always been into the print as the final translation of the scene. This Ceasare doorway offered many opportunities for close-ups, and other detail shots, but an hour for the one shot was more time than my wife had time for.

Best wishes,
Gary

Fine imaging complements the ancient feeling of the subject. I would love to see it large in order to evaluate the print quality and detail, because that is what interests me! The comments and crtiques raise an interesting issue of sizing. I suggest doing whatever enhances the subject/composition. My preferrence would be to go for size and detail because the scene is not simple or abstractly graphic. Yes, I would like to see it 8x10 and svour those tones!

Beautiful texture in this photo and a perspective giving me the urge to walk up those stairs and try to open that old heavy gate and peep inside:-)
Warm wishes for the new year to you and your loved ones.

I admire the quietness here seemingly deliberately sought out. The composition's squareness is excellent and appropriate to the subject. The soft lighting avoids distracting tonal contrasts. It would be nice to see the image larger. However, the smallness lets me imagine the presence of the original 8/10 print.

Thank you for your comment John....I appreciate your taking the time to critique.

Inspiration for me is serendipity! It occurs with me when I see a native person who strikes me....or a beautiful building ......the moments are relatively few, but powerful. I will look at something 20 times before I take a photograph. Sometimes only twice. :) It is an hours process to set und fire the cable.. It is a blessing to me when I am able to capture something as beautiful as I see it on the groundglass..... and then translate that to the paper!!

Best wishes....and safe travels following the holidays....

Gary, its strange that you posted this just now. I am taking a class in photography and the subject is inspiration - what inspires us to make images. I had been thinking about this and a tentative conclusion was texture. I am attracted to seeing the photograph be able to capture the texture of what I am seeing. This came from my days playing with a view camera and from ultra fine grain films. Sometimes I see it in digital images but only rarely and almost never when we get down to 800 pixels. So in that sense, your images just tease us, you are the only one seeing what is more than likely wonderful in your images. Just felt like sharing. Happy new year.

Charlie,
I appreciate your comments.
The upload is the entire format, as most platinum prints are not cropped. I do not think images need to be big to be good. the detail present within the door and bricks is the focus. I need no distractions on the steps. A good thumbnail will get your attention. As the thumbnail of this image is soft and not representative. Still it got your attention. Even with shooting an 8x10 camera, my image is never larger than 8x10.

I think it is very easy to see the textures and tone scales in the image as presented. This photo was taken in 1991, and kept in small scan as loading times in those days were very slow.

As with much travel photography, the opportunity to move an 8x10 camera is limited as compared to miniature cameras or digital. One shot is normally what I take. Good or bad.

Appreciate your comments, but feel totally comfortable with size and presentation here. I really wouldn't change anything.

Cordially,

Gary

dear gary,
with a large format camera you should have uploaded the max format here. it is hard to judge the technical quality in such a small picture. the subject is great but what i am issing is some distinct light to give the scene some effect. alternatively, as we hardly can switch on the sun, a strong attraction could have been an object of strong contrast or unsual form placed on the steps, hung to the door or leaned in the corner. possibly a slight change of the camera position to either side could also have added some interest and attraction. the way it is, this looks rather documentary and would invite me to get closer for a number of close-ups.
have another go once you burden yourself with the tripod again!
saludos cordiales
