The two main figures, the cricified and the praying person are definitely strong enopugh enhanced by their contrast to the rest of the scene. I find the fact very nice that the woman just stands there and doesnt exhibit any "dramatic" behavior - its a prayer in its most inner sense: Silence! Even an atheist like me has to bow his head with respect in front of that.
But the image also makes a step towards abstraction. The several black shapes, inlcuding the two protagonists, create all together some sight that seems to hiver in front of the less strongly contrasted background. If one looks a bit longer then the main things "sublime" in front of the rest.
From the technical point of view it was the limited dynamics range that created this kind of "hovering". I adjusted the levels (attachment) and the image converted to something completely different - still nice but not as metaphoric, as you made it.

Excellent composition full of religious meaning or perhaps showing the irony of faith as well depending on the spectator. Very moody and suggestive.
