Thanks Todd for the explanation. Something like common loons which during the none breeding season down south look very different from what they look up here.

Joe,

Some species of birds have an alternate plumage that occurs semi-regularly. These are called "morps". They are not the same as albinism which affects things like eyes and skin pigment. In the case of the Rough-legged Hawk, there is a plumage that consists of all dark brown feathers (except for part of the underside of the wings) as seen in my other recent post. This hawk is not a dark morph, so I labelled it "light morp" to indicate that it is the same species, but with lighter, more colourful plumage. Technically, it is not a "light morp" like the Red-tailled Hawk, which has a number of different plumages. I guess you could say this is a regular morp Rough-legged Hawk.
