I like the shots from the 300 2.8 but it is not easy to get it to lock focus on the target. That is what I was hoping the MIII would help facilitate. I tested the 300 2.8 as you suggested and it looks like it is a sharp lens.
It looks like you are right about the MIII problem. I hope it is sorted out soon.

Thanks Joe, how are you enjoying your 300 2.8? I picked up a used EFS 60 2.8 and have been playing with it. It seems to be good for flowers, but hard for bugs/butterflys. I got it used and it's in mint shape. Still evaluating it. It looks like the MKIII focus problems are real, but scattered. Apparently Canon has stopped shipping them temporarily. Best regards, Art.
