About This guy really didn't want to be a model. I wanted to catch him with his tongue out but I had prestered him enough so I let him go in peace.

Neat shot! We don't have snakes around here. I'm sure that's a good thing though, aha.

Thanks for all your comments Art, I appreciate your input. As you point out, I may be over processing a bit. I checked out your shot of the garter snakes and I agree the colour of your snakes looks more natural. The colour cast must have come from increasing the saturation a bit. A big benefit of this site is to get constructive feedback from other members so hopefully you can improve your images.
All the best,
Joe

Thanks John for the comments. Actually with my 300mm lens and 1.4TC I can stay quite a distance from him.
All the best,
Joe

Thanks very much Nicole, Garter snakes are quite harmless and are actually quite beneficial as they eat flies and mosquitoes. They are good critters to have in your garden. I don't think I will put him in the fridge next to my beer. :))))))
All the best,
Joe

Joe, just as a follow up, the temperature/colour cast on this shot again shows too warm. Look at my Garter snake shot recently titled "Snakes Alive", you'll see the difference in the light temperature, my shot looks cooler. Also, I think I have too much contrast in my garter shot and maybe a touch overprocessed too. I have a habit of using too much contrast, but am now working on reducing it and using exposure control combined with brightness to try and get a better looking shot. Thats one of the reasons I shoot in Raw, it lets you adjust these things a bit better, and then put the finishing touches on in JPEG. My other problem is my glasses, they seem to block some of the brightness on my monitor, and I sometimes over sharpen and over expose. I am trying to correct that too. Post processing as you well know is an area of expertise in itself, and can really affect the outcome of the finished shot.

Nice close up and real sharp, maybe just a touch to much contrast, levels adjustment and over processing. (I hope you don't mind my comments Joe, and don't take them in a negative way, I always try to analyse the technical side of the shots and only make the comments to help if I can, I think Tim touched on the subject too), best regards, Art.

Excellent capture, Joe! Great focus on his eye and head, and I like the detail of the scales.

Excellent photo of the snake and...oh my, I could not take that shot with only these milimeters!!! lol....I need more than 2000mm for that! Excellent focus only at the head! Very nice.

Thanks very much for the comments, suggestions and for checking out my gallery Tim, Specifically, what PS adjustments did you have in mind? I have tweaked the lighting, colour and sharpness in PS Elements 5 before posting. Perhaps you could show me what you are thinking.
All the best,
Joe

Nice shot of a cute fella!
I had a king snake that was VERY unwilling to model for me....so I popped him in the fridge for about 15 minutes, and he came out hyper-sluggish and 'cooperative'. After my shoot, he spent the REST of the day on his hot rock. :)
