About This Afternoon at Radio Rd, a flock of at least 8 Black-crowned Night Heron attacked 2 female mallards and their babies.
The battle lasted only a few seconds. The heron’s strategy was to distract the females, while the other herons took the only 4 babies left.
The event was so fast that I only got pics of two of the heron’s carrying the baby ducks.
Them one of the herons took one of the babies to the pond, washing it off and swallows it in a matter of seconds.
Although this story may sound cruel and savage, it’s just the way Mother Nature works. In order to survive, the Night-crowned Night Herons need to eat the baby ducks.
Eventually the adult or the baby’s herons will also be eating by hawks, raccoons or other predator.
It’s the circle of life and death…

Hello Ardalan,
Thank you very much for your comment.
I have been over dozens of times at Radio Rd and Baylands, and other places were Black- crowned Night Herons are common and I have never seen anything similar to the duck predation that I witnessed this past weekend.
I feel privilege to capture this picture and share it with you guys.
Take care and hope to see more of your great shots.
Yamil

Nature does seem to be cruel at times, Yamil, but as you say, that's the way it works. You got a great capture of it, though! Marvellous details in your shot.
Dave.

that's the best i have ever seen with this great documentary about.
I bet that it took you long to find the right moment and that's what makes this shot more worthy than what it simply looks like...

Well done,

All the bests
Ardalan
