You asked for an honest appraisal.
First . . . lose the frame. WAY too much. The emphasize and attention really should be on your work and not the presentation (IMO). I see countless people hiding mediocre work with snazzy frames. You don't need that. Let your work speak for itself.
I don't know about your editing software . . . but if you have channels, curves, whatever . . . I would try to decrease the red/magenta saturation just a tad . . . to give it a gritty, reality tinged feel.
You have captured here the PERFECT expression and defined it eloquently. The combination of threat/worry expressed in those eyes is spot-on!
Be cautious not to oversharpen . . . or, possibly, consider adding a tad of HEAVILY feathered Gaussian blur to the BG (at least 125 px feather) . . . if you can.
See the white color outside the black frame. If possible, consider replacing the pure white with #f3f3f3 (an offwhite) - the true color of the UF BG . . . .

Wonderful shot of this beautiful Mother and baby Sam. She sure does seem to say 'keep your distance with 'those ohhhh so 'SERIOUS Eye's !!!'
And I Love how You say - Just like any Mother she also looks worried-- We are all the same- Mothers, and Father's - of every breed- at least I also like to think so.
