About Heard they used to be called flutterbys . . . until an error ocurred somewhere. True? Who knows. Still, seems more of an appropriate name since they resemble neither butter nor flies! :)

Thanks very much Mary . . . I don't know how true it is - but I've heard that . . . and I don't care either, because, (LoL!) - it's a MUCH better name!

I didn't realize that is what they used to be called. Your title caught my attention because that is what we call them sometimes. I agree that it is a more suitable name. Your brilliant colours and vibrant details are marvelous. I love the sense of motion in this. Terrific.

Fantastic colours, Doyle! I agree from a strictly butterfly point of view a less distracting background would be good, but the colours here, more than just the macro of the butterfly are what make this shot IMHO. Having said that, it still is a good macro of the butterfly.
Dave.

No problem what-so-ever Markus. I agree and would have preferred a better BG plant and DOF . . . but was happy with what I got. The plant DOES get a lot of attention.

Sorry for my English, Doyle. I meant the flower which is patterned in a similar way than the butterfly (different color though) and distracts imho a bit from the main subject.

Riny.

Thanks Markus . . . but I'm not sure about the phrase "more still background". Less cluttered? Less focused? I mean, it's not moving. Just curious to understand so I can consider your respected POV in a proper light! :)

Thanks John....

You're right about him moving . . . He may not have even been fully landed on this shot and the sequence seems to indicate he was microseceonds from it. Even at this speed there is still some motion blur of the left wingtip. Narrow DOF is my first thought in Macro photography and a deeper field would likely have caused me even more issues with the florals already being distracting (IMO). Thanks for stopping by . . . looks like we're both asking the same questions on this one.

Oh, clearly I shot this BEFORE I had the D-200! Otherwise I doubt I could have done it since I still need three times the time to figure out how to do what I want as far as settings are concerned. Over time it will become second nature to me like the D-50 did. (I hope).

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Excellent macro shot, Doyle, showing us the butterfly in it's natural surrounding. From an artistic pov I would prefer a more still background.

Fabulous array of colours here, carried over superbly into the framing. This really is a lovely shot - would a slightly smaller aperture have got a bit more sharpness on the butterfly? I guess that unless he was moving, you didn't need the 1/1000 shutter, even if you had the lens zoomed right out. (But then those blue flowers might themselves have become too sharp - tricky one.)

Thanks Radmila. I have no idea about what the flowers are called. They have been planted near the lighthouse at Point Vicente here and a flurry of butterfly activity attends them in tghe early morning. They range from light to brilliant blue petals . . . and I suspect the reddish color is new growth (like you see in roses). It WOULD make an interesting floral but I was passing by on my way to capture the bird photos and took some on the way thinking I would have time on my return trip . . . but when I came back the butterflies were gone! :(

Thanks for the idea though . . . we may well see the flowers again!
