Jan, I like this image because you show us something we tend to avoid looking, "scenic chaos", and you have turned it into something like a pattern of colors and lines.

Carlen -- Thanks for your comments. I appreciate it. In most states here it is illegal for a minor (under 21) to even walk into a liquor store. Some states it is OK, to buy soft drinks etc. Proprietors in Maryland are to card patrons if they look younger than 35 (what a weird guideline). Where I grew up many years ago in Wisconsin, drinking age for beer was age 18. Today it is 21 there for both liquor and beer. Canada is a great place and the morays and attitudes throughout your wonderful country are much more relaxed and open than many other places I can think of. --Best to you, Jan

Wow, that's a lot of warning signs. It's not like it's illegal to walk in there if you're under 21! Maybe the owner got tired of kids with fake ids. Who knows...
The drinking age is 19 here and I don't even get ID'd anymore. (I'm 20 in May) At first I was like wait, do I look old? haha but then I realized it's Canada and no one cares.

John -- I agree but realistically you are being too "logical". :) Many laws are related to local and regional norms and customs. That varies from State to State in the US. AS good example are the age requirements for marriage; they vary widely from one State to the next. Your suggestion makes sense but is not a "politically" acceptable approach to all of these governing bodies. This is true in other countries as well and you will find many of these laws based on religious as well as secular customs. This is the world we live in.... --Best to you, Jan

Jan - I understand that with so many sates and bodies having a say in this, that there are going to be strange rules. But what I don't understand that there are differences in "the legal age" for drinking and driving and voting and being in the military. In Holland there are different age-rules too, but it still strange. I feel there should be one age-rule for everything: either you are an adult or you are not. What do you think?

John -- The 50 states and the Federal government regulate age for different issues. With that many regulatory bodies there are bound to be many odd things that make no sense with respect to age qualifications. Over time these change resulting in some even greater disparities. As for the drinking age, however, the age 21 limit is now pretty much universal and resulted from so many young drivers having alcohol-related accidents. That of course in no way addresses the large number of alcohol-related driving accidents for adults. --Best regards, Jan

Great street image Jan...:) don't think I'd venture in either...
A large sign above the counter or register and one on the door should be ample for starters... Plus, tell me how many don't know the laws if you are under age... They certainly know their rights as set in law... as taught in schools etc... so stands to reason they should know their own state laws as to drinking, driving, sex etc...
Am totally amazed at the attitude of the world *It's not my fault, they sold it to me* and *I'll sue* cop outs when in the wrong ... What happened to responsibility for ones own actions...
It scares me also...
Onie...

Liz -- Thanks for commenting. There is a general fear in business in the U.S. that if they do not give "fair warning" they could be held liable to a law suit. The Age 21 stickers show you how strictly Delaware enforces the law for underage liquor sales. --Best to you, Jan

Thanks, Michele. It is just a liquor store, not a front for another "business". They do not have much competition in the immediate area where they are located and putting on an open and friendly face just has not occurred to them yet. --Best regards, Jan

Hi Jan, to me it is still strange that in the US at 16 you can drive a car and serve in the military, but you are not allowed to drink alcohol. I mean, what is more dangerous to your health?

IMO the curious kind.... this place doesn't want liquor bussiness Jan-- It sounds like another kind of bussiness... I don't know what kind , but it does. Maybe too much 'Law & Order' for me ...(?) It's strange here too cause Oregon is a State Operated Liquor Store. There are 2 in LC. They have hours of 10-6pm and clear windows only like a government office... Michele~

Thanks, Doyle. As I mentioned to Michele, I went in the store and found it to be dark and unfriendly. I don't think they would sell many Powerball tickets anyway, as who would feel lucky in such a place?

Thanks, Michele. I went inside for a quick look and the place was very, very dark. The store was empty and a disinterested clerk was reading a newspaper. They really know how to welcome customers at this store. --Best to you, Jan

Very interesting Jan--- think I might be afraid to enter a place I couldn't see in thru the glass . . . .. but it's likely just compiled over time , right ? I think the smallest sign is 'Come In--we're open' ...ha! Good journalism , and subject of interest.
Best Wishes, Michele~

But it says "Come in, we're OPEN". I guess that means you are meant to go in and get told to leave again if you haven't taken the time to read all the guff on the windows and doors. Maybe they need a sign that says "Welcome to browse before entering" Well seen, Jan!! Best to you Mel

Txules -- Your comment is very funny; no need to be afraid if you are over age 21. I also noticed that the door contains stickers warning women to avoid alcohol if they are or plan to be pregnant. This is a door full of warnings! Once you enter after reading all those warnings then anything that happens: you cannot say they didn't warn us. :) :) --Best to you, Jan
