Hi Bill, Nice Macro, again the sharpening on the background has assentuated the noise, you could try using Unsharp mask filter and increasing the threshold to increase the contrast necessary before the filter will take effect.
If you do want to go Digital SLR in a cost effective manner. Strongly recomment that you look at the Fuji S2 Pro (Street Price ($us1600). Nikon Lens mount and reviews indicate a better camera than the Nikon D100 even though they are both based on the same F80 Body - Different sensors. Of course Money no object Check out the Kodak 14N or the Nikon D1x. Both are about $US5000
