About This image was taken while I had my camera set on multiple exposures, trying to take some action images of a deer running through the marsh. Well, I missed the deer, but still thought the result was a lucky miss. Just a little image manipulation to enhance the already laid back mood of the start of our first real snowfall this winter.

Thanks Hugo,
I really consider it to be a compliment when someone of your stature talks about recognizing a "dark signature style", and "powerful image"
You made my day!

Hi Andre,

Once again a very powerful image - with the dark signature style. Very good shot. Especially the out of focus twigs in the foreground make the image. Very well done.

Cheers,

Hugo

I am always glad when I do realize something about the intentions behind an image, Andre. of course this is something that has too do with the own interpretation, but it seems that at least some general grasp of what the photographer wanted to do is possible.

Have a nice Sunday afternoon,

Nick

Thanks Nick,
Your comments on these two marsh images are making me feel better about being a little pretentious / experimental. It's nice when people let us know that they can recognize the intent of an image.

Indeed, it is moody, but not at all in the usual incompetent way that is used so often as a cheap excuse for not being aware of the basic stuff in photography. Excuse me now for the rather undiplomatic way to say that, but the word "nature" alone seems to make all amateurs think that any capture of nature is automatically reflecting some "higher meaning", which of course is simply naive. But here, here we have a very introspective image - one that plays games with perception but still is rather simple and really *natural* in its appearance.

Going to your other image now!

Have a nice weekend,

Nick

Hi Nick,
I find myself leaning more and more to this kind of image. I know it lacks the perfect sharpness of a conventional exposure and focus, but it is just so moody. As you say, a sort of nature/abstract. I have taken a few more in this same area over the past couple of years. When I look at them, they have a similar mood. One of them, I even altered the reality a bit more than this one by using a kind of blurred layer process.
Take a look at this one and let me know what you think about it. Be warned though, it has been altered :)

Thanks again.

I will be catching up tomorrow with comments to your images and a few others here.

Ha! And what a good luck it was to miss the dear and do this one instead, Andre! You made something that fills the gap between the abstracts of Pan Giannakis and shots of nature!

Especially that background seems to be really stronly illuminated as it shines over the foreground which is so much darker! A very remarkable balance of low and high lights in this very original composition!

Best wishes,

Nick

Hi James,
It makes perfect sense. I suppose what has happened is this becomes a kind of stalker's eye view that has an element of suspense attached to it. The falling snow adds to the claustrophobic effect. Remember the old video games of Wolfenstein and Doom? If you ever played any of those old ones, you will recall that similar feeling of being hunter and hunted at the same time. Wow! Now I'm really reading things into this image! :)
Thanks for these comments.

Yeah, there was some of the same kind of film feeling in parts of Saving Private Ryan (same director). There is a sort of chunkiness to the whole scene, like some of the information is lost in time. Somehow what is missing adds something. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks James,
It seems I'm going to have to try some more images with this pov. I think it has a kind of voyeristic look to it. Although as I've said before I didn't place myself down in a low position to get this image. It's just that the grass and bull rushes were very high. In any case, I haven't seen Band Of Brothers yet. I should rent the series on DVD. I have a pretty good idea what you are talking about though.

This reminds me a bit of the filming techniques used in some of the fighting scenes in Band of Brothers. Nicely put into a still frame, I'd say.

Thanks Derk,
I'm glad you came by to visit. I enjoy trying all kinds of catagories of shots. I'm glad you like this one. I would have thought you might have been drawn more towards something like this one, simply because it is closer to your own style. Rich, dark, natural looking.

Then again, maybe we like to see things that differ from what we do ourselves.

I love this shot. Your comment on my photograph brought me to your images. You do very nice work. Stuff that I can relate to even though the shot of the nikkormat bothers me. It does not seem to belong with the rest. That's why the comment "I must be missing something". Keep up the great work.

Thanks Fadel,
Good to see you back. Funny thing when I was preparing this image, I wasn't trying to copy your style, but afterwards, I thought to myself, this looks a little like some of Fadel's shots, so it must be pretty good :)
Thanks for the inspiration!

I think we are expecting a little more snow this weekend, so I might try a few more shots with falling snow.

I'm glad you like it. There are many images in my portfolio from this area. My house is just walking distance from a large tract of river valley land. This one was taken at a marsh at the mouth of the Rouge River, close to Lake Ontario.

I thought it was a sort of relaxing mood that was caught. Big snow flakes will do that to us I guess.
I thought it was about time to add you and a few others to my friends list. I kept meaning to add a few more people and never seemed to get around to it. Your support has always been consistant. Thanks for that.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the comment!
I find it interesting how a few people have commented on the POV. I think maybe people are assuming that I was down low to the ground when I shot this, but that wasn't the case. The bull rushes and grass are actually over six feet high. I was even standing on my toes to try and get a little above the grass. In any case I think you are right about the perspective and POV adding to the mystery. I attached an image of what I was searching for that was taken about one minute before this shot. (Attached to a reply comment to Ina.)

Andre, the doe was nice too, but this turned out great as a winter picture! I could never capture snow flakes, I think I saw only you and Dave Stacey do this successfully. It's an idea though, with the plastic bag - to use it as a "raincoat" for the camera :)

Andre Denis Andre Denis   {K:66407} 1/18/2007
Thanks Ina,
Last weekend, my wife and I were following some deer foot prints in an area of the marsh where I had seen some deer earlier on in the fall. I'm attaching a shot that I got about one minute before this posted one. From the attached image, you can see that it was snowing a little lighter than in this one. Also the reason for the great POV in this one is the height of the grass. I use a baggy coat and a plastic shopping bag to protect my camera in the snow and rain.

I find it easier to get in and out of a big plastic bag than a camera case. I have a pretty large lens hood on the camera, so that also helps to keep snow and rain off the lens. Occasionally some drops will get in the way and have to be cleaned.

When we saw this doe hiding in the grass, I set my multiple exposure on and hoped for the best when she started to run. This time, no luck. They are pretty fast.

Great shot Andre! It looks like it's coming down heavy, never mind the deer! This is very beautiful and the colors are truly winter-like - I like the low POV. I love how you captured the flakes, like in a fairytale.
I'm counting the days to spring. Yesterday I took the camera out, but I only lasted less than an hour at minus 15C :) How do you do as to not have snowflakes landing on the lens, or the filter? Ina

Andre, we have got a bit of frost freezing rain and snow in Burlington as well, everybody is excited talking about happening as for now. I expect more winter modes to surprise us badly. Anyway the lesson I have learned often going for planned sessions is to be prepared for everything else possible - you got no deer but you got nice atmospheric picture and this id great. Cheers, NJ
