i like these creatures and this is one of the cutest portraits of a spider i have seen... the lens is sharp no doubt, but it surely needs a skilled photographer to show its full potential ;)
congratulations Joe

Gee Kelly I sorry about the nightmares. We don't want that. I think this is her (most spiders we see are ladies) good side but her abdomen was kinda cute with nice markings. :) Thanks for the feedback. Sleep tight, count soft and cuddly sheep. :) :)

Thanks Sascha for the kind words. DOF is very shallow and a challenge with these high macro shots. Getting it in the area where you want it ie eyes is a tricky.

Thanks very much for the comments Jan. I used a 430EX with a Canon off camera cord 2, a Stoffen diffuser and a homemade flash bracket attached to the tripod mount on the lens. Here's a pick of the set-up.

Thanks Art. I have really enjoyed my time here so far. I'm glad you like the spider shot. I haven't noticed a lack of sharpness with the 24-105. It may be the light or my technique. Did you look at the Jones Falls image? Does it look sharpe to you? I checked out the original, full size image at 1:1 and it looks sharp to me. :)
I haven't bought the 17-40 yet. I likely will but haven't fully resolved the CA issue yet.
Your tulip shot is excellent.

Joe -- Holy Toledo! This is amazing; it looks like this little guy was holding a "smile" pose for you. The detail is amazing and the muted tones are perfect. Did you use a ring light for illumination?

Welcome aboard Joe, I think you'll like it here, nice friendly bunch of folks. The MPE really shines in this shot, very sharp, nice dof, and great lighting. I had a look at your 24-105 shots and would have thought that lens to be a bit sharper, maybe it was the light. Did you order the 17-40 yet? Have a look at my tulip festval shots (BIP) and you will shee my 17-40 pictures. You'll be able to tell which ones are the 17-40.
