Very nice exposure. Back lit subject is not an easy subject to shoot. Nicely composed and aesthetically pleasing and interesting lines.

Oh my gosh Jason I was studying your image and then read your 'about' ..........<> I hate to break it to You .. but I think you are a natural at this 'Still Life' scenario .. I guess Doyle already sort of told you that too .... You've aced the 'lighting' perfectly... and to me it's about the main thing to get...The tones are so natural and warm.. they are also familiar .. soo it's very approachable, attractive , and as nessa says Natural..... Which is very appealing. Personally I LOVE the blinds, and shadow lines they play with the light... and the simple elegance here.
Happy New Year to You + Your's Michele~

Thanks Matt, nit-picking is what I'm looking for. I chose this crop through the viewfinder such that the vertical blinds composed the entire background - no walls in the frame. You can see the string for the blinds in my first attempt, before I straightened my aim, in the attachment. J.

Thanks for the comments, nessa. I like the natural look as well. Hopefully, with practice and helpful pointers, I'll get better at capturing these scenes. J.

This is good J. Lighting is perfect. If I was going to nit pick I would say that it was cropped a little too much on the left. The rest of the back of the chair could have been left in the frame, unless there was some distraction that was cut out. The same on the right, but, like I said, this is nit picking. Good shot.

Doyle: thanks for such a detailed and honest critique. It's exactly what I was looking for, and very helpful.
I have adjusted the image to show a bit more detail in the dark areas. I had done this to the photo before posting it, then decided to leave it original until I received feedback on it. I also wanted the exposure info to be relevant, for those viewers/critiquers who look at that.
You have quite the eye for detail, Doyle. I adjusted the tilt 0.3 degrees.
I like your idea about removing the chairs to better display the shadows. Honestly, I hardly noticed them (the shadows) while setting this up. I saw mostly the room filled with the colour of the blinds/table. They are both similar colours, and quite reflective. That, along the the neutral colour of the walls really fills this room when there's enough sun shinning in (rare this time of year.) I don't think I captured that very effectively, but all I can do is keep trying.
Thanks again for a terrific critique Doyle, it is greatly appreciated.

Nice Jason . . . love to see people trying new things and branching out here and there! This actually isn't as bad as your about section seems to think you capability will be!
That being said . . . I do have a couple of suggestions (IMO) that might be something to consider. I would consider either increasing the ambient light source behind you or using a fill flash to illuminate the scene better on the dark side (watching shadows carefully). A matter or personal preference, I'll admit . . . but you DID ask for honest feedback and I would do that. Perhaps even filtered light of some sort!
I also feel (to my eye) there is a slight horizontal tilt . . . which should likely be adjusted using the vertical blinds as a guide. It's slight (I think) - about 1 degree (See attached). Now . . . on a purely personal level . . . I might even think about making this a more mininal composition by removing the chairs from the scene completely. They work in and they'd work out . . . but I like the chosen BG here and the shadows on the floor accent those lines VERY well. Those same lines are a bit lost with the chairs IN the shot and the far chair(s) . . . with it's different lighting and play of shadows don't (to my eye) add as much dynamic tension to this shot as the lines would. Looks like you're a natural after all! This is nice. :)
Season's Best Wishes, Doyle I <~~~~~
