Thanks again Doyle. I'm leaving it as is...really had no intention of reposting even after the suggestions to crop...it's a good learning tool for myself and others who view.

The rating thing is weird...I just gave a 7 on a 6.53 image, my rate brought it down to 6.25 or something close to that. Complicated system, I'm sure!

Take care...Robin

Thanks for your two cents Mel...I value your opinion also! The background on this reminded me of one of yours, if I remember correctly it was "Dew Drop"...had it marked as a favorite but ya had to go and take it down. :(

Happy Holidays to you and the family! Hugs...Robin

Robin:

Uh uh. My choice is the original. That MASTER bokeh should not be disturbed (IMO). The crop doesn't really destroy it but it also doesn't fix it completely . . . so why bother? I see THREE favs already . . . so my thought is leave it be! :) I still think it's an amazing BG!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

PS: I didn't lowball your rating so don't understand why it isn't much higher with all those 7s. The BG alone is worth a 6!! :)

I think I like your original crop Robin. The background deserves as much exposure as possible, not that its the star, but the combination of both the lovely bloom and the b/g are just stunningly beautiful as they are shown here. If anything needs to be cropped, then some of the base with dark bg and stem could go....but even then......Gorgeous shot, love it to bits, and its going into my favs too. :) Have a good holiday, hope the weather is kind to you.......*hugs* Mel

Hi Sam...

Thank you for the wonderful critique, the seven, and a favorite pick...you made my day! I took your advice and cropped a bit off the top...attached a copy under my reply to Doyle. See what you think...

Thanks again Sam...I value your opinion!

Take care...Robin

Doyle my friend...thanks for taking the time to study and leave your valued (and somewhat long-winded) opinion...hehehe...jokin'! Really, it is a great, meaningful critique...one that would score "awesome" if the option were provided!

Since you asked...the background is part sky and part foliage from plants behind the blossom. As far as the comp/crop goes, well...if I cropped this once, I cropped it 10 times. It all boiled down to the bokeh (way too cool to disturb) and NOT wanting a centered composition. And yes, that's why I chose the heavy black border. I'm attaching a slightly different crop...better, worse, doesn't matter???

Thanks again...I expect nothing less than honesty from you. Hope you can manage to make it through such a miserably, warm weekend!

Take care...Robin

What splendid light contrast Robin! I love high contrasts and dim atmosphere with flowers. And here there is a splendid colour contrast too. In my favorites.
Tonight we have chosen the same theme and I too can't take pictures in this periode (camera under repair).
Cheers.

Hi Robin.

I Love the composition of this shot. The fact that the right side is in shadow nad the left side is illuminating wonderfully. The light play on the stem is nothing short of awesome.

I have sat here for over an hour looking at the shot and finding more and more wonderful things I Like about it.
Finally the Bg is what brings it all together for me.
My only nit would be the tall crop. I think you could take a bit off the top without losing any of the BG effect. Just a different thought..
Anyway it is a perfect picture and I would give you 7/7.
Plus it is going straight into my favorites.

My best Regards

Sam III

Wow Robin . . . I'd like to know more about the BG. I like the shot, overall . . . the clarity is there - the composition is, technically, acceptable. But what draws me back to this image over and over as I review for this comment is that master bokeh . . . like one you'd expect to find in the BG of renaissance painters (Renoir comes to mind). It's almost like the action - the coming of Summer - is happening back there - and this spry blossom is rising to greet it. The concentric colors from the blue along the left side, graduated into green and becoming darker and darker as it expands to the ends. The stem accented in blue is the highlight needed to pull it from the darker BG and in that task it succeeds. There is a sort of built in anticipation . . . you almost expect to see the petals unfold like some slow motion Disney documentary would do it . . . and that does give a bit of tension.

It's a fascinating image . . . but something about it "feels" off . . . I suspect it's the tall, narrow presentation and the low placement of the bloom . . . but I'd never disturb that GREAT bokeh . . . it feels like an even more important part of the composition than the subject. The heavy border does help (a bit) to compensate for it . . . (Is that why you chose it?) . . . uhhhhhh . . . (how to end this on a nice note . . . think, think, think) . . . Oh! I bet the flower seems nice up there in the snow! Doh! I Meant . . . I bet the flower makes the snow seem less . . . errrrr . . . Bet the photo makes a warm . . . . Did I mention we are likely to get RAIN this weekend?? We'll be suffering miserably. ;)

Season's Best Wishes,
Doyle I <~~~~~
