I use aCanon 580EX Speedlite. That is a female or a immature male you are asking about. You will find at this time here(California) the older males will have lots of red. go to my Hummingbird portfolio and check it out. I have some shy guys and some that stay around. These are called Anna's. They do not migrate so they are EXTREMELY territorial. They chase each other all day. The flash syncs to 1/250 sec on my Canon 30D. The hummingbirds wings beat at 22-78 times per sec.It takes about 1/900-1/1000 sec to stop them.Any other questions email me . I have an Email address at the top of the page.-Rich

Nicely done Rich - Your bird shots are always very well done. I have a question: . . . I have posted several shots of a bird I've since dubbed Gumby. Gumby had no red throat but was otherwise like this one. On three ocassions while the tolerant bird allowed me to shoot photos, he was joined by another hummingbird with a large brilliantly colored red throat . . . a ruby-throated hummingbird. Him I call Pokey. Now Pokey would leave any time I moved so much as a hair! And after the third time . . . I've not seen him back. Is it possible Gumby is an immature Ruby-throated Hummingbird (hence no red or natural fear of me)? Also, what kind of light are you using for this shot. On camera flash? Do you think a strobe would freeze the wings?
Oh - sorry to dwell on questions instead of critiquing the shot . . . but then, there's not much to critique . . . it's awesome!
