About This architectural icon is of particular interest to New York City's photographic community. At 23rd St. where Fifth Avenue and Broadway cross it is considered the gateway to the photo district. After more than 100 years and some recent events, it requires an extreme makeover.

The photo was taken at 6:15 am under a cloudy sky. I needed shadowless light to get as much of the facade as possible. I am a little disappointed I didn't get a better angle on the sentinals on the crown, but that's another shot.

I guess it is a bit strange and after more than 103 years, it's proven to be a bit fragile -- at least the facade. It was one of the first buildings in NYC with a steel frame.

I think that one of my favorite buildings, which actually predates the Flat Iron, is the building with the 2-story cupola and gold dome to the right. Absolutely beautiful and maticulously cared for.

Thanks for you interesting comment. Regards, Bill

Interesting observation, Doyle. Initially it didn't bother me. Although it was my first time working with this particular camera, and I had a very good tripod, what appears to have caused the shimmer in the lights was the newly paved cross street - 23rd St. to be exact. Speed bump effect.

Thanks again for your comment and interest, Bill.

Bill this is impressive indeed. The atmosphere here feels very much like a dawn and the colors are spot-on perfect! The leftside red light traffic streak wobbles . . . not due to you but likely due to the traffic movement . . . seem a tad distracting to me because the smooth straight light trails seem more photogenic and the bumpy ones suggest a shake . . . either of the light or the camera. Longer shutter speeds smooth the line but they throw off other aspercts like the exposure and traffic lights. So really, there's no answer to that . . . other than luck. This is very impressive work.

It's a strange bit of architecture and looks a little fragile, sitting there on it's own.
Regards, Gary
