Yes indeed - art is truly individual. Some guidelines can make artwork more appreciated by more people but I can´t see why that should be the goal. Each artist wants to tell a story or express something in her/his own way and that is what makes artwork unique:-)
Yes nothing was done to this photo - I was there in this moment, recognized it as sth that was interesting to me and froze it:-)
Thanks for your interesting comment:-)

Thank you for your thoughtful comment, dear Mirek. Indeed they are related but it was more the sense of life I wanted to capture here - how we as humans are dependant on water to exist and how it inspires us to play:-)

This is an excellent picture and the framing is very strong. I don't mind the tree in the picture since it's about life. I see a interesting discussion here...but art is art and it varies from person to person. If 'you' are happy with a picture....I guess that should be it. Offcourse there are ways of improvments in each and every case but the moments are limited. I see you took this using nikon coolpix which I believe have a shutter lag. So previsualization of the shot had to be there, which is just great.

Nice picture. I like the way how both people look detached from each other with the tree branch stuck in the sand like a border post between them. It is not clear from Your shot if they are related, but I like the imaginary tension here. Very good work.

Dear Arto
This is a natural real moment which is one of the reasons why I´m so happy about it. The treelooking branch was one that we found on the beach and that my daughter played with:-)
Thanks for commenting:-)

I din't imply anything. I wished!

Thanks heavens the history of comments is kept with the image, but if somebody read that "comment of the day" on the front oage, he/she would have to wonder. From the other "comments of the day" that I read, I have strong reasoins to assume that UF chooses readily anything that contains "wow", "fantastic", "great", or even "It's already full of life Annemette..", which altered my real comment beyond recognition for the eyes of the many people that have no time to examine the histoiry of comments exactly.

And since I am not on that hyperwave of admiration expressed through the usual slogans, I really have to wonder whether UF tries to suggest "quality" by choosing euphoric comments, which suggest that photos *have* to be good since the critiques are good.

But who knows, perhaps we are all superb photographers already, so we don't need any negative critiques in this forum at all? ;-)

Annemette Rosenborg Eriksen Annemette Rosenborg Eriksen   {K:55244} 1/18/2007
Dear Nick
The tree/branch in connection with the motion was actually a candidshot which is why I think that the similar lines are surprising to see. Not something set up as you imply.
Well, the comment on the frontpage does indeed not say much, but people can always read it here if interested.
I value your comments and save some of your advice, but in this particulary case I don´t agree with you;-)
After a while it gets more obvious who wants critique or not that can be used to improve one´s skills, if taking the time to comment on people´s photos.
I´ve met many good people on UF, so for me it has turned into more than a photoforum. People from all over the world meeting on UF also demands some courtesy which is why I think people are so polite and kind when commenting.
Take care
Annemette

This is a fascinating image, rich in symbolism. First of all, I can't believe there has been a debate about the tree's 'value' in this photograph - it is the main reason it has such a powerful effect. The way it emerges - almost triumphantly - from the water is so extraordinary and represents for me the potential for all living things to adapt and survive under difficult circumstances. It also marks a dividing line between the child and the adult, between different stages of our development. This child of nature is experiencing the first flush of youthful exploration, fascinated and entranced by something she has found in the water. Meanwhile the man is himself playing, casting off the shackles of adulthood for a while. The way you have created a link between the shape of the man's throwing arm and the tree is a masterpiece of photographic geometry... one could also say that the child's hair is similarly linked in this way. All in all, a profound and moving meditation upon what it means to be alive...

Nick Karagiaouroglou Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:127263} 1/12/2007
Yes, you are right! The tree is indeed very very similar to the simplified geometric representation of the man in lines! Now, if somebody could tell him to through the stone again but exactly from the position that brings him exactly behind the tree at such a distance that their apparent sizes are the same... hmmmm...!!!

Regarding the comment, I just have to confess that I am not glad at all about having it on the frontpage, for the simple reason that it is no comment at all but rather the followup of the real comment that I previously wrote. Any ambitioned photographer would have to really wonder, what the displayed "comment" might mean, in case he/she would read it, taking it as the comment itself.

So, my friendly suggestion to the people at UF just has to be, to take the previously made comment and put on the frontpage, or else the very unpleasant suspicion might (will?) come to everyone that has some interest for photography, that it is not the seriosity of the comment that counts, but its "nice sounding words".

In this sense, would anybody know what my comment for the photo really was, when reading what is on the frontpage now? I still don't like the photo at all as it is, but reading only my displayed answer to your answer, one might also thing that I find it nice!

This mania for "nice-isme" destroyes more than anything else here!

As always, take care!

Nick

Ah Nick - we´re on the frontpage of UF:-) I forgot to tell you that one of the reasons why I also like the small tree/branch in the oceanwater is because of its shape. Look at the man and the tree- they look very similar in the way they´re standing:-)

Hi Annemette,

Fantastic!

A very artistic story is told here! The viewer is allowed to chose variations to a story...or "this holds interest". To me, the tree delineates the individual perspectives of the man and child.

hmmm....

ABSOLUTELY love it Annemette! Love the tree in the middle (brilliant idea my Viking friend) and the way it almost reaches out to your young mermaid daughter. I particularly like the image of people at each end of a life span simply having fun and enjoying life surrounded by water . . . the provider of life. This is one of your strongest shots . . . and you have many so that says a lot!!

Dear Cathy
Oh but we do have some nice summers:-)That is one never knows how they´ll turn out! We have rainy or grey weather and then some warm days and then colder weather again. 25 degrees celcius is a good pleasant summer for us. This summer though we had an entire month of good sunny weather and temperatures about 28 degress which is quite unusual.
Thanks for your kind comment:-)

Thank you so much for your kind comment, Mary. I belive you´re one of the first to recognize the theme of this photo! That indeed water provides life both mentally and physically, and the tree represents life. Of course it can´t live in oceanwater, but it was placed there to represent the meaning of water to all living beings.
Best wishes

How very strange! A tree that grows with the water of the sea. Thank you for the info Annemette!

Hmmm, I assume that those trees get bigger than that, or mermaids must be really tiny if they are able to grow on them! ;-)

As about what would become of the mermaids in case somebody pulls that tree out, oh well, let's have some humoristic inspiration in the morning:

They could then go into the water and learn swimming! :-)

Or they could capture a good photo without that tree! (Sorry, I couldn't resist! :-D)

Or they could even go for a picnic and keep quiet, allowing some long haired sailors to listen undisturbed to their heavy metal. What the heck? Don't they care about us? Even on the endless ocean you just can't start headbanging without sound interventions! ;-)

Take care too,

Nick

Dear Nick
This is a special tree that you´ll only find on the shore of Asserbo in the North where little mermaids grow on them, so I would never pull it up! What was to become of all the lovely mermaids then that sing for us when we go sailing?;-)
I hope that helped:-))
Take care

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique It is already full of life through both persons, Annemette. Anyway, what kind of tree is that that grows in the presence of sea water? Normally the salt concentration would mean death to any tree. Some special tree growing on sea shores perhaps?

Best wishes,

Nick

Oh no! Why did that tree/branch/whatever had to be there? It destroyed the good composition by interrupting the leading lines of the waves from the foreground to the depth, diminishing the perspectivistic distance the horizon, and almost neutralizing the depth difference between the foreground and the middleground. I am for trees bit in this case: Pull it out somebody!!!

Take care,

Nick
