I shot this photo on shutter priority at 1/640
and the apperture f/7.1 and the ISO 500 and I pan by hand just fallow one horse and the lense I use was my Nikon 18-200 DX-VR I hope this can help you

Good capture J-E . . . Did you pan when taking this shot? Tripod?? Shutterspeed??

Just curious after a dismal photo shoot at a speedway (although 100 plus mph cars aren't exactly horses). Some shots I took while panning seemed to work out. The pan speed had to be roughly comparable to the car speed though. I was using a 300mm without tripod . . . but don't think the problem was with me since I was seated.
(Fortunately - I took hundreds of shots and did get lucky with some of them).
Here, I see some motion blur on the hooves . . . yet the tail, the jockey and the muscled horse are all tack-sharp. Your colors are good too. It's definitely a good POV . . . I almost feel like I'm leaning on the rail! :)
