Bummer.
I like the fact that the trees go black.
It would be nice to get better saturation out of the shadowed regions and less starkness out of the bright regions. Are you using a polarizer? That--and a graduated filter to calm down the sky portion--might just do the trick.
(I think the vantage point is great. The shot and the framing are also great.)

this was taken at the only time this wood gets any light, 8.00am And unfortunately from the only available vantage point!

I think I agree with Chris. This is a good scene and the colors available could be better suited by different lighting. Maybe a different time of day? It just looks to me like the mid-day light is too harsh to do your selection justice. Since it's close by, maybe you'll shoot it again?

nice scene, looks like it was high contrast light? I could see this with subtle orange/yellowish soft lighting.
