About Many of the buildings on Hong Kong Island are almost all reflective. Some, in this case, more than others. The effect is stunning, in that when you look up, the building hides against the sky. It's a brilliant illusion.

From the taxi window once again. rain drops on the lens removed in PS, and constrast correction to get more life out of the clouds.

I'll be returning to this building next week, as it's directly beside the hotel.

thank you Jude!

Ya know... the whites look ok on my monitors as well. Even printed, this image has some information in the white.

..I agree... Hugo's crop is wicked abstract!

cheers, and thanks for the comments!

Perhaps it's just me, but the white at top left doesn't bother me at all. Then again, it could just be that my monitor handles it a bit differently than most.

I did prefer Hugo's crop, but as he said, either way, it's a wonderfully powerful shot.

Hong Kong is am amazing city. Wish I'd taken more fotos while we were there.

The ever returning advice (or maybe more eloquent: the mother of all advices: Always, listen to the wife...

Thank you Petal!

i'm liking my 'taxi view collection' more and more.... so glad you like 'em!

I agree w/ you and Hugo... the white is just too blown out. I tried every trick...except for using my day job mind to flat out replace the sky... but I just can't go there w/ my photography...ya know?

i've attached the untouched..uncropped version... clearly a taxi shot :)

thanks again Petal, and thanks for the honest comments!

cheers,
-J

Thank you Hugo!

...you and my wife had the same idea w/ the crop. It pretty much kicks the door open to the abstract view. I like the crop, but that space at the top gave me a feeling like a Jacob's ladder. Sadly, that sky was just so blown out. ...I seriously need time to capture this difficult city that appears too easy to photograph!

Thanks for the crop! I'll have to get out of the cab next time, and walk around for the perfect lineup of the lines... such an amazing city.

cheers!

Super reflection and view up!! The black band and its repetition is fabulous!!! Good tones, great (taxi) angle, fine composition... well done!! The sky on the right is wonderful, but the part above the building is a bit bright for my liking though... I haven't seen the original, but maybe it's because of the contrast correction...

Hi Joel,

You've been active! Very intriguing composition, facilitating thoughs on alternative compositions...:)

To me, the diamond shapes created by the black lines are the most important element in this photo. The Geometric / symmetric lines of the building are a close second, and the sky is the icing on the cake. yet I think the division and placement of those items (for as far as you could control) isn't ideal in this solution.

I think the area of sky is a tad excessive, absorbing too much of the frame, thus my initial thought was to crop quite a bit off the right hand side, letting the right edge of the building intersect with the right edge of the frame (squaring the image). unfortunately, that's not an option, as you'll end up with a blown out bit in the top right.

So then I came up with the following solution, probably rendering it even more abstract than it already is.... With your background I'm sure you'll hate me for this, as I disregarded any form of image aspect in this crop, and I distorted t he perspective, but I think it's an alternative. The longer I think about it, the more I'm convinced there are not that many options to choose from...

Either way, a great shot. Very powerful...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Joel! Amazing stuff; the building looks almost like a drawing! The clouds on the right make this picture look so cool; the building seems to continue truly high above the sky! Superb work!

you are very kind! thank you very much my friend!

If you ever get a chance to go to Hong Kong... you will go crazy taking pictures. I have nearly 200 images of time-laps images of people in crosswalks, and sky-rises. so amazing.
